Legendary merengue musician Rubby Pérez, renowned from the Dominican Republic, has sadly passed away at 69 years old. Social media platforms are now flooded with heartfelt tributes from fans, who knew him as the creator of the popular song “El Africano.

Rubby Pérez’s death at the age of 69 was confirmed by his manager Enrique Paulino to Rolling Stone.
In a tragic turn of events, reported by AP News on April 8, 2025, it was shared that Pérez perished after being trapped in debris when the Jet Set nightclub’s roof caved in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The heartbreaking incident resulted in at least 98 fatalities and left around 160 individuals injured. Unfortunately, Perez was on stage performing at the time of the accident.
Prior to receiving confirmation of Pérez’s demise, it was assumed he was still alive due to statements made by his daughter Zulinka Pérez to the local news channel Noticias Telemicro. On Tuesday morning, she informed the outlet that “He is inside and we pray to God for a swift recovery. He has injuries, but he’s alive; they found him singing. He began singing so they could locate him.

Despite claims that the police found Pérez and took him to a hospital, his brother refutes these reports. Speaking to SIN News, he stated, “Currently, he has not been extracted from the debris. He has not been admitted to any hospital.

He also mentioned, “Given that 14 hours have passed since the incident took place, only divine intervention could potentially work a miracle at this point. Unfortunately, Rubby remains trapped in the debris and we haven’t been successful in rescuing him yet. We can only hope he is still alive. I feel it is important to share this information honestly as part of our family.
