It is sad to report that the well-known TV actor Rick Hurst has apparently passed away. Throughout his career, which was mainly focused on television, he also made appearances in various films. However, he will be most remembered for portraying Deputy Cletus Hogg in the CBS series The Dukes of Hazzard and related projects.
Rick Hurst passes away at 79, claims report
On June 26, 2025, I received the sad news that I, along with countless others in the gaming community, lost a dear friend – Rick Hurst. He passed away in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 79. His first wife, Candace Kaniecki, shared the unexpected news with TMZ. The cause of his death is currently unknown to us all. I am left to mourn alongside his family, knowing that he leaves behind his sons Ryan and Colin, who share his passion for gaming and acting. Rest in peace, Rick. Your legacy will live on in our hearts and games.
Earlier, Hurst had to cancel an upcoming event at the Cooter’s Place museum located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Following his demise, they expressed their sorrow on Facebook saying, “Our hearts are heavy with grief!!! You will truly be missed!!!
A multitude of messages expressing sympathy have been sent to Hurst’s family. Previously co-star from The Dukes of Hazzard, Ben Jones, stated in a release, “It feels unnatural that Rick Hurst passed away this afternoon. When something like this happens so suddenly, it becomes ‘harder to comprehend,’ as one might say nowadays.
Jones pointed out that Hurst and he had been friends for 45 years, and there wasn’t a single moment of those years that didn’t make him smile or laugh. He went on to say, “Indeed, he was a professional comedian, but beyond that, his heart was as vast as Texas. He was an excellent actor, a hilarious comic, and a truly supportive partner in our work.
The character portrayed by Hurst in The Dukes of Hazzard was highly praised by critics. He reprised this role in The Dukes of Hazzard: Reunion! (1997) and The Dukes of Hazzard: Hazzard in Hollywood (2000). Among other significant television roles, he is recognized for his appearances on Amanda’s, Highway to Heaven, The Wonder Years, and additional series.
