Legendary musician Peter Yarrow, well-known for his work with the folk music trio Peter, Paul & Mary, has sadly passed away at 86 years old. Best recognized for their songs like “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” “500 Miles,” and many others, he was also celebrated for his political activism throughout his career.
Peter Yarrow passes away at 86, claims report
As reported by The New York Times, Ken Sunshine, who represents Peter Yarrow, confirmed his passing to the publication. He disclosed that the singer, fighting a four-year battle with bladder cancer, passed away in New York on January 7, 2024, with his family by his side.
Bethany, Yarrow’s daughter, penned a tribute to her father upon his passing, which was subsequently published by Variety. In her touching message, she depicted Yarrow as an individual who was “kind-hearted, imaginative, fiery, spirited, and insightful.”
This version maintains the original’s essence while using more contemporary language that may be easier for some readers to understand.
In her note, she encouraged Yarrow’s fans to continue believing in magical dragons, saying, “Belief in magic dies when we stop hoping, caring, and singing.” Additionally, it was noted that he was deeply committed to progressive ideals, yet his music resonated with people of various ages and political beliefs from all corners of the globe.
In 1961, Yarrow joined forces with Mary Travers and Paul Stookey to establish the band known as Peter, Paul, and Mary. After releasing numerous successful songs and working together with artists such as Bob Dylan, this threesome earned a place in the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999. The group disbanded in 1970 but reconnected again in 1981 until one of its members, Travers, sadly passed away in 2009.
Following Peter Yarrow’s passing, I too felt compelled to honor his memory. In a heartfelt letter, my bandmate Paul Stookey did just that. He reminisced about Peter as more than just a colleague – he was a “brother.” In this unique bond, Peter played the roles of both a younger and an older brother to him. As I look back, Peter was not only the younger brother I never had, but also the one I always wished for when I needed guidance. His absence will be deeply felt, as I miss not only the brother I never had, but also the one who offered me wisdom and companionship throughout our shared journey.
The singer is survived by his son Christopher, daughter Bethany, and wife Mary Beth McCarthy.
