It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Kwong, the charismatic actor who brought the electrifying warlock Rain to life in John Carpenter’s cult favorite, Big Trouble in Little China. Born and raised in Sacramento, Kwong played a significant role as one of the Three Storms in the 1986 action-fantasy film. Over nearly nine decades, he amassed an impressive acting portfolio with almost 90 roles in both films and television.
Peter Kwong passes away at 73, claims report
Peter Kwong, famously known as the martial arts expert who brought one of cinema’s most iconic villains to life, sadly passed away on Tuesday evening. The news of Kwong’s demise has sparked global remembrance among fans, inspiring them to reflect upon the artist’s enduring legacy that transcends his acting performances (as reported by Entertainment Weekly).
Apart from his on-screen roles as an actor and martial artist, Kwong was also a dancer and activist who actively opposed Asian stereotypes in the film industry. His fight added depth to his portrayal of the supernatural character Rain, significantly challenging conventional casting norms.
Kwong first appeared on television screens in 1976 with his debut in the anthology drama series Visions. A year after that, he secured his initial film role in the TV movie titled Panic in Echo Park. During the subsequent decade, the actor was frequently cast in action-oriented roles.
In my fandom journey, some of the iconic shows I admired during his formative years are The A-Team, Wonder Woman, Dynasty, Little House on the Prairie, Cagney & Lacey, Miami Vice, The Greatest American Hero, MacGyver – just to name a few.
Later on, Kwong assumed the role of Tommy Tong in Michael Ritchie’s dark fantasy-action comedy film, The Golden Child (1986). In the same year, he appeared as the legendary character Rain in the fantasy action movie, Big Trouble in Little China.
Over time, I’ve been fortunate enough to grace various renowned television series, such as General Hospital, Drake & Josh, Malcolm & Eddie, among others. My latest small-screen performance was for the 2020 edition of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Supporters across social networks are expressing their condolences for the action star, who made a significant impact by advocating for increased representation of Asians in film. A fan expressed on X (previously Twitter), “I’m saddened to learn about the passing of Peter Kwong. He was one of my favorite secondary actors. He played Rain in Big Trouble in Little China.
Another fan joined the conversation, expressing their shock and sadness at the news of the passing of Peter Kwong, who portrayed “RAIN” in the series. To them, Peter will always be remembered as the ultimate cool cat, sporting his long locks while donning a sharp two-piece suit.
