Nikki Giovanni passes away at 81, claims report
On Monday, the 9th of December, 2024, Nikki Giovanni, aged 81, passed away in a hospital after dealing with complications from lung cancer. Her wife, Virginia C. Fowler, reported that Giovanni’s health issues were connected to her long-term struggle with this disease. (As per New York Times)
1943 saw the birth of Giovanni, who was originally from Knoxville, Tennessee. She earned her history degree from Fisk University, where she also published an essay about gender issues. Afterwards, following the sorrowful demise of her grandmother, Louvenia Watson, Giovanni found solace in writing poetry. Later on, she obtained a master’s degree in social work from the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work and completed her fine arts education at Columbia University School of the Arts.
While attending Columbia University, Giovanni unveiled her poems titled “Black Feeling, Black Talk.” Beyond this, she was an ardent supporter of the Black Arts Movement during the late 1960s. Known as the “Poet of the Black Revolution,” Nikki Giovanni’s work showcased and celebrated Black Joy.

As a fervent admirer, I’ve always been captivated by the extraordinary body of work from Nikki Giovanni. Her career has been adorned with numerous accolades, including several NAACP Image Awards, which are testament to her exceptional talent.
