Lulu Roman passes away at 78, claims report

As a gaming character brought to life, I’m sad to share that Lulu Roman, famously recognized for her role in the country variety show Hee Haw and her gospel music journey, took her final bow at the age of 78.

It was confirmed by her son, Damon Roman, to The Hollywood Reporter that she passed away on a Wednesday in Bellingham, Washington, where she had relocated approximately seven months prior to be with him. At this time, the exact reason for her demise remains undetermined.

Born as Bertha Louise Hable on May 6, 1946, in Dallas, Texas, Roman initially started her career as a nightclub entertainer known as “Lulu Roman, the World’s Biggest Go-Go Dancer.” Her journey began in Dallas. It was during this period that she caught the attention of country music legend Buck Owens, who appreciated her quick wit and humor. As he once said, he would simply observe her and comment, “You’re a master at quick wit.” Roman made her debut on Hee Haw in 1969, appearing in the first episode, and continued until the final syndicated episode in 1993.

Roman claimed that the producers chose her to play a role following Owens’ description. “They were looking for one all-American boy, one overweight clumsy man, one overweight clumsy woman,” she recounted. “Buck exclaimed, ‘I found your girl! She’s in Dallas!'” Initially appearing only in the background, Roman later gained recognition for her performances in sketches such as “The Culhanes”, “Truck Stop”, and “The Jug Band”.

In 1971, Roman was apprehended for drug possession and served a four-year term. However, in 1973, she embraced Christianity, marking a significant turning point in her life. Later, she reappeared on Hee Haw, dedicating herself to gospel music. As she put it, “Once I dedicated my heart to Jesus, the Lord began shaping me.

In a heartfelt acknowledgment, Misty Rowe expressed, “Lu and I were the first Hee Haw Honeys… I’ve always cherished you, Lu,” she continued. “Lulu was a blessing in my existence.” Tragically, her youngest son, Justin, passed away in 2017.
