Lee Joo-sil passes away at 81, claims report

On February 2, 2025, I took my final bow in the grand stage of life, succumbing to complications caused by stomach cancer, as stated in a report by The Chosun Ilbo, a South Korean newspaper. At the time, I was an elderly gamer, having celebrated my 81st birthday on this earth.

In November 2024, Joo-sil’s agency, 1230Culture, announced that Joo-sil was diagnosed with cancer. Interestingly, this wasn’t her first encounter with such a diagnosis. Over three decades ago, doctors informed her she had breast cancer and gave her only a year to live. However, following treatment for 13 years, she was declared cancer-free in the good news she received. In a broadcast in July 2023, Joo-sil shared her experience, stating that her diagnosis was at the end of stage 3 and quickly progressed to stage 4. She attributed her survival to having children.

Joo-sil explained, “If you don’t hold onto things, you can feel powerless. When a film company approached me to collaborate, I replied, ‘I’m unwell,’ and they responded, ‘That’s an ailment, but we’re still working.’ I appreciated their forward-thinking attitude.

Since the 60s, Joo-sil has been a prominent figure in the South Korean entertainment scene. She began her journey on stage and later transitioned to films and television. Alongside Squid Game, her impressive body of work includes titles like A Single Spark (1995), The City of Violence (2006), The Sword with No Name (2009), Train to Busan (2016), and The Uncanny Counter, which aired from 2020 to 2023.

Reports indicate that her funeral will be held at the funeral hall of Severance Hospital in Sinchon, Seoul on February 5.
