Jay North, who became famous for playing Dennis Mitchell in the popular sitcom “Dennis the Menace” back in 1959, passed away at 73 years old on April 6, 2025. His death was announced after a long fight against cancer. As a young star, North gained wide recognition, and later in life, he openly discussed the challenges he encountered both during and following his Hollywood career.
Here’s what we know so far about Jay North’s death.
Jay North passes away at 73, claims report
73-year-old actor Jay North, most recognized for portraying Dennis Mitchell in the TV series Dennis the Menace on CBS, passed away on Sunday following a long struggle with cancer.
Laurie Jacobson, wife of Jon Provost (the star of Lassie), shared the news of his passing. According to her, Jay North, our dear friend, had been battling cancer for several years. This morning at noon EST, he peacefully left us at home. She further mentioned that “He had a heart as vast as a mountain, cherished his friends deeply… Now, finally, he finds peace.
As I, Jay North, hail from sunny Los Angeles, born on the sweltering August day of 1951, my life has been a whirlwind of adventure that’s often found its way onto the small screen. I’ve graced series like Wanted: Dead or Alive, 77 Sunset Strip, and Sugarfoot with my presence. In a twist of fate in 1959, I was chosen to embody Dennis Mitchell, a mischievous youngster straight outta the beloved Hank Ketcham comic strip.
For a span of four years, the program aired. Notably, North assumed the role of Dennis in advertisements for companies such as Kellogg’s and Skippy Peanut Butter, and even featured in guest appearances on The Donna Reed Show and The Red Skelton Show.
Later on, North carried on with roles similar to those in Zebra in the Kitchen (1965) and Maya, and made appearances in The Lucy Show, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and My Three Sons. During an interview with Filmfax magazine in 1993, he revealed, “The strain of the business, coupled with Joe’s (his co-star on Dennis the Menace) passing… led me to become quite serious, deeply melancholic, and withdrawn from society.” Additionally, he mentioned that his aunt mistreated him both physically and verbally during his time as a child star. He lent his voice to both The Banana Splits Adventure Hour and The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show, and made his last on-screen appearance in the 2003 documentary Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star. Regrettably, this well-liked actor is no longer with us; he leaves behind his wife and three stepchildren.
In this rephrased version, I’ve aimed to maintain the original meaning while making it more conversational and easier for readers to comprehend.
