As a seasoned gamer with years of experience in following NFL teams and their management, I must admit that the firing of Joe Douglas from the New York Jets has left me somewhat disheartened. The rollercoaster ride that has been the Jets’ recent history is reminiscent of a never-ending game of Madden where your star quarterback keeps getting sacked and your team just can’t seem to catch a break.
The General Manager of the New York Jets, named Joe Douglas, has been dismissed by team owner Woody Johnson. This decision was made approximately a month and half after the team parted ways with head coach Robert Saleh. In an official announcement from the NFL squad, Douglas will be temporarily replaced by senior football advisor Phil Savage, as the Jets take their bye week with a disappointing win-loss tally. Here’s a summary of reasons behind GM Joe Douglas‘ dismissal.
Why was Joe Douglas, New York Jets General Manager, fired?
Initially, it appears that Joe Douglas was let go due to the New York Jets’ disappointing performance in the 2024 NFL season, with the team currently holding a 3-8 record. Yet, there are those who speculate that the underperformance of quarterback Aaron Rodgers also played a role in Douglas’ dismissal.
According to ESPN’s report, it appears that Douglas was not involved when Saleh was let go in early October, which might suggest that he could have been at risk too. Hired back in June 2019, Douglas is now in his final year of a six-year contract and was expected to become a free agent by the end of the 2024 season.
Over the course of his time with the team, the Jets had a relatively poor win-loss record of 30-64, including no successful seasons and no playoff qualifications. Due to the team’s performance this year, it was unlikely that Douglas would return to New York in 2025, according to NFL.com.
As reported by Robert Zeglinski in USA Today, it came as no shock when [name of person] was let go. Both Saleh and Douglas had faith that Rodgers would be an excellent selection for 2023, but unfortunately, he suffered an achilles injury the same year, impacting his return to form. This season, Rodgers hasn’t managed to throw 300 yards in a single game, and his current passer rating is comparable to what it was with the Green Bay Packers back in 2005 and 2006.
In 2021, the Jets had difficulties developing quarterback Zach Wilson, who currently plays for the Denver Broncos. Regrettably, the risky move to acquire Aaron Rodgers has not proved successful.
