Gerry Turner reveals he has bone marrow cancer
In a sad turn of events, the lead actor of The Golden Bachelor, Gerry Turner, has revealed his devastating prognosis: he’s been diagnosed with an incurable type of bone marrow cancer known as Waldenström macroglobulinemia.
In a conversation with People, the 72-year-old Turner revealed his health update. He detailed that his condition was identified following a visit to an orthopedic specialist for a longstanding shoulder problem. During the checkup, the orthopedist spotted abnormal blood indicators. This discovery prompted additional tests and ultimately a consultation with an oncologist.
Turner’s health issue, characterized by an accumulation of cancerous cells in his bone marrow, has significantly altered his personal life. In the same conversation, he disclosed that this diagnosis played a role in his decision to divorce his wife, Theresa Nist, only three months after their televised wedding. He explained, “I desired my life to proceed as routinely as possible, and I came to interpret ‘as normally as possible’ to mean spending time with my family – my two daughters, my two sons-in-law, my granddaughters. The importance of maintaining a relationship with Theresa was still present, but it became less pressing.
Despite Nist’s claim that health issues didn’t play a role in their split, Turner wishes to share his experience to let others grasp the stresses and tough choices he had to make during this hard period. Though his diagnosis is severe, Turner remains resolute about living life to its fullest. Turner expressed, “I plan to cram as much fun as I can into my life and cherish every moment. When I’m gone, I won’t have any regrets.
