Francesco Rivella passes away at 97, claims report

It’s said that Francesco Rivella tragically passed away on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2025, at the venerable age of 97. Regrettably, the specific reason for his demise has not been revealed yet.

Born in Barbaresco, Piedmont, Rivella later moved to Turin where he earned a degree in bromatological chemistry. At the age of 25, he started working at Ferrero’s chemical lab situated in Alba. Initially, his role involved refining raw materials and creating new products for Ferrero, which led to the birth of famous items like Kinder and Ferrero Rocher. Over time, Rivella rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a senior manager within the company. He also developed a close relationship with Michele Ferrero, the son of the founder, who took over the family business. (Based on an article in the New York Post)

According to Gigi Padovani’s book “Mondo Nutella” (Nutella World), Rivella and Michael Ferrero traveled the world, not to copy sweet treats, but to enhance and improve them. The original version of what is now known as Nutella was initially called Giandujot and went on sale for the first time in 1946.

According to Nutella’s official site, the original recipe for their sweet spread was intended to be baked as a loaf for spreading on bread. But by 1951, it had been transformed into a smooth and convenient spread. Notably, the first jar of this tasty treat hit the shelves in 1964.

Following retirement, Rivella found a new home in Alba, where he cultivated a passion for fruit farming and the native Italian game, pallapugno. His funeral occurred on February 17, 2025, and rumors suggest he will be buried in Barbaresco. Widower Rivella is survived by his three sons, one daughter, and seven grandchildren.
