In 1982, McCarthy, along with peers Vaughan “Bon” Harris and David Gooday, established the group Nitzer Ebb. Their first album, titled That Total Age, was released in 1987. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, they gained prominence with songs like “Control I’m Here,” “Lightning Man,” and “Fun to Be Had.” After putting out their album Big Hit in 1995, the band ceased activity for over a decade.

Beyond his work with Nitzer Ebb, McCarthy teamed up with a variety of artists within the electronic and industrial music genres throughout his career. During the 90s, he collaborated with Depeche Mode’s Alan Wilder on the Recoil project. Later, in partnership with French producer Terence Fixmer, they formed the duo known as Fixmer/McCarthy. Nitzer Ebb reassembled in 2006 and put out their last studio album, Industrial Complex, in 2010. McCarthy also pursued a solo career, launching his first solo effort titled Kill Your Friends in 2013.

To add to that, over the last few years, McCarthy’s health has increasingly been a cause for worry. During a scheduled show in 2021, he collapsed and was temporarily replaced on stage by his bandmate Harris. In March 2024, after receiving a diagnosis of cirrhosis of the liver, McCarthy made the decision to stop performing live concerts.
