As reported by Deadline, in an interview with Sight & Sound magazine, the director admitted that his current health issue, emphysema, is a consequence of his prolonged smoking habit. In other words, he acquired emphysema due to his extensive history of smoking. He went on to say that he found great pleasure in smoking and appreciated tobacco’s unique scent, the act of lighting cigarettes, and the experience of smoking them. However, he acknowledged that this enjoyment came with a cost – for him, it resulted in emphysema. He has now been smoke-free for more than two years. Furthermore, Lynch mentioned that after walking just a short distance, he often finds himself running out of breath.

Due to his health concerns and the necessity of remote work during the pandemic, there are questions about whether he will continue directing in the future. Despite this, David Lynch has shown hesitancy towards remote directing, leading some fans to wonder if he might be considering retirement.
