At this challenging period, our thoughts and sympathies are sent to Brian’s family and those who cherish him deeply.
Born in Grand Junction, Colorado, but raised in the sunny Phoenix, Arizona, I attended St. Mary’s High School, where my baseball skills were noticed. In 2005, the Los Angeles Angels selected me during the MLB draft, but instead of turning pro right away, I chose to continue my education and athletic career at the University of San Diego. Fast forward to 2008, the Baltimore Orioles took a chance on me as their fourth overall pick. The following year, I stepped onto the field for my first game with the team.
In the years following his final Major League Baseball game in 2016, Matusz continued his career in the lower leagues. He played for the Arizona Diamondbacks’ minor league team, the Acereros de Monclova in the Mexican League, and the Long Island Ducks in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
In Matusz’s household, many relatives took pleasure in athletics. His dad, Michael, was a track-and-field competitor for Purdue University, while his sibling, Chris, excelled at college baseball.
