The lifestyle brand, established by Blake Lively in 2014, mysteriously shut down following just under a year of operation. Despite generating initial excitement, the company grappled with internal management problems and a hostile work atmosphere behind the scenes, fueling speculation among fans about its demise. With Blake Lively currently embroiled in a legal dispute with her It Ends With Us co-star Justin Baldoni, there is renewed interest in understanding what transpired within the company.
Here’s what you should know regarding Lively’s previous fashion brand and the factors leading to its shutdown.
Why did Blake Lively’s Preserve company shutdown?
In 2014, the actress known for Another Simple Favor introduced her lifestyle brand, Preserve, which operates as an upscale online marketplace specializing in unique, handcrafted items.
Despite starting off promisingly, Preserve disintegrated within just a year due to allegations of a harmful and unsuitable work environment. These accusations were substantiated by ex-employees who shared their experiences with The Daily Mail. Interestingly, this venture was run from a Manhattan studio apartment owned by Lively’s brother, Eric, who took care of the company’s day-to-day operations.
Workers reported that the work environment was messy and lacked professionalism. It was alleged that Eric regularly consumed alcohol and used marijuana. Additionally, he often slept late, causing colleagues to wait outside for him to arrive. For a prolonged period, employees were said to have no designated workstations. Moreover, they were forced to sit on the floor in a congested space that combined living quarters and office areas.
According to certain employees, it was rumored that Eric Lively carried on an affair with a staff member while he managed the company. Frequent delays in paychecks were said to have put some workers under financial stress. A handful of these individuals even considered taking legal action, leading to reported settlements worth up to $300,000.
From my gaming perspective, it’s like when you agree to keep certain details hidden in a secret raid boss battle. Similarly, everyone involved was bound by non-disclosure agreements, shielding the company’s challenges from public scrutiny. To make matters worse, word on the street is that our neighbors have been grumbling about what seems to be an illegal commercial operation going down in the apartment, escalating the troubles for Preserve even more.
Closed down officially in 2015, facing criticism for its pompous advertising and questionable business strategies. Ex-employees find it ironic that Blake Lively is now accusing director Justin Baldoni of sexual harassment and a hostile work environment, considering their past complaints about mismanagement within her family’s operations.
Additionally, it was reported by ex-employees that when Preserve, Blake Lively’s lifestyle company, failed, she appeared unconcerned about their hardships and the issues stemming from her brother’s management. However, as of now, the actress has not addressed these accusations publicly.
