Betsy Gay passes away at 96, claims report
The news of Betsy Gay’s passing has led to an outpouring of condolences on social media platforms. Her friend, Robert Satterfield, paid his respects by posting a tribute under her birth name, Elizabeth Cashen.
Back on June 13th, 2025, I fondly remembered Elizabeth, who graced our screens as child actress and singer Betsy Gay. Her talent was evident in timeless classics like “The Pinch Singer,” “Arbor Day,” “Our Gang Follies of 1938,” and “Came the Brawn” with the Our Gang Comedies. What a legacy she left behind!
Robert Satterfield not just announced her demise, but also unveiled uncommon snaps of her from her initial years in Hollywood. He emphasized her attendance at the last gathering of The Little Rascals in 2014, underscoring her enduring bond with the show.
Besides her acting work, Gay also released tracks for different record companies. It’s said that she recorded the song “Belle of the Old Barn Dance” for Superior Record Label in 1946. Following this, she embarked on a tour along the East Coast, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
In 1943, my last acting role was in the movie “What’s Buzzin’, Cousin?” where I portrayed the character Saree. This film, masterfully directed by Charles Barton and penned by Harry Sauber and John P. Medbury, also showcases Ann Miller and Eddie “Rochester” Anderson.
Betsy Gay was exceptionally skilled at yodeling, excelling at the challenging vocal method that swiftly shifts between regular voice and a higher pitch. This remarkable singing talent earned her consecutive California State Yodeling Championships in 1945 and 1946, demonstrating abilities that distinguished her from many child performers during Hollywood’s Golden Age.
