On one hand, I’ve been a loyal fan of the game series since its inception, and the prospect of seeing my beloved Vault Hunter characters brought to life on the silver screen was exhilarating. However, the deluge of negative reviews has left me feeling a tad deflated.
The upcoming Borderlands film is receiving unfavorable criticisms, and you might be curious about how the intellectual property owner feels about this predicament. Initially, Gearbox developed Borderlands, but it was later owned by Embracer Group. However, in a recent reorganization, Embracer transferred Gearbox to Take-Two Interactive. This transaction was finalized on June 12, 2024, allowing Take-Two to weigh in on the Borderlands movie controversy right away. What does Take-Two have to say about the Borderlands movie bad reviews?
In an interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick urged viewers to keep an open mind about the Borderlands film, even though it received negative reviews from critics.
“Why not check out this movie? It’s been meticulously crafted by many talented individuals, featuring a fantastic intellectual property, an outstanding cast, and a visually appealing design. Let’s find out what the public thinks about it.”

When questioned about whether the movie’s possible flop would affect Take-Two’s prosperity, Zelnick replied: “…no, the movie’s performance won’t influence our finances or the franchise’s success in any way.”
The development process for the Borderlands film took an unusually long time, which may have led Take-Two Interactive to consider abandoning the project prior to purchasing the studio. The project had been circulating since 2011, and it wasn’t until 2020 that director Eli Roth became involved. Filming was completed in 2021, but the film remained in a holding pattern until Tim Miller oversaw a set of reshoots in 2023. It then spent another year in storage before finally hitting theaters on August 9, 2023.
Despite avoiding direct involvement in the film’s financial consequences, Take-Two seems optimistic that public feelings towards the movie might differ from critical reviews. In doing so, they seem prepared to maintain the Borderlands brand, regardless of how well the film is received. As for Randy Pitchford, CEO and part-time magician at The Gearbox Entertainment Company, he has remained silent on the issue.
