What does the big Doctor Odyssey twist mean for the "dream" fan theory?

As a seasoned gamer of TV shows and a dedicated fan of Doctor Odyssey, I must say that this twist with Avery’s pregnancy has taken the show to a whole new level! It’s like being on an epic quest in a role-playing game, where suddenly you find yourself facing a hidden boss battle out of nowhere.

Doctor Odyssey just unleashed a massive twist for Avery that can affect the show and a fan theory!

Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for Doctor Odyssey Episode 8

Fans of “Doctor Odyssey” were anticipating that Season 1 would explore the love triangle involving Max (Joshua Jackson), Avery (Phillipa Soo), and Tristan (Sean Teale). In the pilot, Max and Avery shared a romantic moment, while Tristian has harbored feelings for Avery despite his reputation as a ladies’ man.

An unexpected twist in Episode 6 was it resolving the triangle in an unconventional manner, by all three characters participating in a threesome. Following this, they attempted to carry on as normal, but Max later confessed he could no longer proceed since he only had feelings for Avery. Tristan appeared interested in her, yet acknowledged she might not reciprocate those feelings. However, it seemed Tristan was prepared to move forward with the ship’s chef Vivian (Laura Harrier).

What happened in Doctor Odyssey’s midseason finale?

In episode 8, which served as our midseason finale, the spacecraft showcased an unusual theme: it was all about a peculiar group of individuals who were fanatical about rubber ducks, dubbed “Quackers”. Even Captain Massey (Don Johnson), initially skeptical, found himself transporting them. Max, too, expressed concern over the potential ecological harm these toys might cause.

At the gathering, there were two long-time acquaintances of Avery’s, and shortly after greeting them, she shared a private matter: She was expecting a child. The more astonishing revelation: She wasn’t sure if Max or Tristan was the baby’s father. Unsurprisingly, this news left Avery in a state of confusion, as her lifelong aspiration had been to attend med school and become a genuine physician, not to embark on the role of motherhood.

In the midst of my ship’s typical bizarre malfunctions, like dealing with an object-hoarding crewmate, I finally revealed some unexpected news to Max and Tristan. Max, ever the curious one, bombarded me with questions about it and potential scenarios, while Tristan remained as calm as a winter night, it seemed he’d been through this before on other ships. However, he kept his past experiences to himself, leaving us all in suspense. This encounter made it clear that neither gentleman was overly enthusiastic about becoming fathers.

Speaking to TVLine, Soo discussed the big twist and how she welcomed it.

I’ve just been grateful and really honored to tell this story and try to bring as much truth and humanity as possible to a woman’s conversation with herself and her partner-slash-partners about what she wants to do.

It’s a huge wrinkle for the show and especially for a certain fan theory about it.

What does this mean for the dream theory?

Since the debut of Doctor Odyssey, viewers have strongly proposed a significant theory suggesting that the entire series unfolds within Max’s mind while he is in a coma induced by COVID. They highlight the surreal nature of the ship and dreamlike imagery, hinting at the possibility that this is a portrayal of an afterlife designed to transport souls. The last episode even featured a woman expressing her desire to remain on the Odyssey, to which Max responded, “You can’t stay on the Odyssey forever.

Soo admitted that the cast has been made aware of the theory, but declined to confirm its validity. However, she subtly suggested that she understands why fans might come up with such outlandish speculations.

Anything is truly possible as this has been established as this luxurious fantasy. I feel like maybe the best thing to do is just go along for the ride — because your answers will come eventually.

In a twist, Avery’s pregnancy raises questions about whether Max is dreaming about parenthood in this series, as some viewers speculate. This scenario doesn’t clarify how he envisions conversations between Avery and her friends unless these interactions are included in his broader fantasy. This plot development contributes to the growing interest in the show and sets up the second half of the season, which will delve into Avery’s pregnancy and the intriguing love triangle that makes “Doctor Odyssey” an exciting voyage for spectators.

Doctor Odyssey returns on Thursday, March 16 at 9/8c on ABC.
