In Episode 1 of “Paradise,” which premiered on both Hulu and Disney+ on January 26, a significant storyline revolves around James and his extraordinary peach. This tale might ring a bell for many as it originates from the 1961 children’s book by Roald Dahl. Though the book’s relevance in the plot isn’t immediately apparent, it becomes clearer as the episode unfolds. Here is a rundown of its role in the storyline.
What is the significance of James and the Giant Peach in Paradise?
In Paradise Episode 1, after wrapping up a jog, I, James, found myself back home where my dad, Sterling K. Brown’s Xavier Collins, was getting ready for work. As I sat in the kitchen enjoying breakfast with my sis, Presley, Dad walked in and noticed we were already chowing down without him. We exchanged our usual playful banter, but it came to a halt when Dad asked what I was reading. Turned out, it was “James and the Giant Peach,” and Presley had given it to me!
It’s strongly hinted that the book has a significant effect on Xavier, but we don’t discover precisely what until the end of the episode. The series weaves between past and present events, and prior to the current timeline, Xavier’s wife had already passed away. As Cal listens to Xavier, he learns that their son was named after a character from James and the Giant Peach – a book his wife adored so much she read it aloud to her belly throughout her pregnancy and became deeply engrossed in it. After her death, Xavier found himself developing an obsession with the book as well. He shares with Cal that Roald Dahl initially intended to call the book James and the Giant Cherry instead of peach, and wonders if his wife would still have named their son after the book had it been called James and the Giant Cherry.
The underlying implication in this discussion is that Xavier seems to hold Cal responsible for his wife’s demise. So far, details have been scant, but in Episode 3, it’s disclosed that James’ wife was situated in another city when a massive disaster struck, annihilating most of humanity. Regrettably, Cal couldn’t manage to get her onto a flight bound for Paradise City. As the story unfolds, we can expect further revelations concerning her passing.
