Robert F. Kennedy Jr., now serving as the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, has stirred up controversy through his comments concerning antidepressants during his confirmation hearing. He expressed worries about Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), which elicited a mix of endorsement and opposition. This conversation among legislators and health professionals has since become a contentious issue, with some doubting the validity of his statements and their potential repercussions.
Here are all the details on RFK Jr.’s statements on antidepressants.
Here’s what RFK Jr. said about antidepressants
Recently appointed as the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has voiced concerns about the safety and effectiveness of certain antidepressant medications known as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs).
During his confirmation hearing, Kennedy expressed that he personally knows individuals, including family members, who have found it harder to quit using SSRIs than they did quitting heroin. Additionally, he emphasized during a 2023 live stream with Elon Musk that there is significant evidence, though not definitive, suggesting a connection between the use of SSRIs and school shootings.
Approximately 13.2% of American adults utilized antidepressants from 2015 to 2018, with doctors frequently recommending SSRIs like Prozac, Lexapro, and Zoloft for treating depression and anxiety. Notably, a study conducted by UCLA demonstrated that these medications can substantially lower the occurrence of suicides.
Kennedy’s assertions have been disputed by professionals in the field. Keith Humphreys, a researcher specializing in addiction at Stanford University, stated on NPR that antidepressants and heroin are in completely different realms when it comes to the risk of addiction. He further explained that during his 35 years in addiction studies, he had only encountered two or three individuals who believed they were addicted to antidepressants, compared to thousands he has met who struggled with addiction to heroin and other opioids. At a confirmation hearing, Senator Tina Smith (D-MN) challenged Kennedy by saying, “The comments you’ve made suggesting that antidepressants cause school shootings perpetuate the daily stigma faced by individuals dealing with mental health issues.” Kennedy defended himself by stating, “Senator, I am not misrepresenting my statements.” Smith countered by saying, “I am simply repeating your own words, Mr. Kennedy.” (as reported in Vanity Fair)
Previously, Kennedy suggested the establishment of “wellness farms” as a choice for people who wish to discontinue their usage of SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) and similar medications. However, the details regarding his policy on SSRIs have yet to be defined clearly.
