As a devoted fan of John Oliver and his insightful commentary, I found myself deeply moved by his emotional endorsement of Kamala Harris during Last Week Tonight. While many people were quick to label him as tearful or weepy, it was refreshing to see such a public figure express genuine sentiment towards the political process.
In the lead-up to the U.S. Election Day, talk show host John Oliver seemed to get emotional while endorsing Kamala Harris on Last Week Tonight. Later, he explained the circumstances behind his emotional endorsement on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

In the video you’ll find linked below, Oliver expressed his support for Kamala Harris. However, it was the moment when he appeared close to tears as he urged viewers to cast their votes for her that truly stood out.

In the video, Oliver expresses that a significant portion of his discussion has revolved around reasons not to vote for Donald Trump. However, he also shares that on the U.S. presidential election day coming up on Tuesday, he will be casting his vote for Harris. The clip that gained attention was when he became emotional and declared, “I care about this nation deeply. I’m an immigrant who chose to be here,” before revealing his voting choice.
On his chat with Stephen Colbert, John Oliver admitted to being surprised by the extensive media attention his clip received. As Colbert brought up headlines about a “teary-eyed” John Oliver appealing to America, Oliver clarified the situation. He verified that he wasn’t actually crying and stated:
I wasn’t shedding tears… Being from Britain, I’ve grown quite emotionally numb. Time has made my feelings largely irrelevant.
As tough as old steel, I didn’t even flinch when Colbert handed me a tissue. Emotional fortitude? Got it in spades!
