As a long-time fan of John Mulaney, I’ve always admired his raw humor and wit. But his latest revelation about his struggle with addiction and recovery journey has added a new dimension to my appreciation for him. His candidness is truly inspiring, and it’s a testament to his strength and resilience that he’s been able to overcome such challenges.
John Mulaney openly discusses a close call with a cocaine incident where he nearly required medical attention. At 42 years old, Mulaney was recently bestowed the title of Comedian of the Year by GQ for their 2024 Men of the Year issue. In an interview with the magazine, Mulaney shared insights into his past struggle with drug addiction and his journey towards recovery, among other topics.
John Mulaney’s nearly called paramedics after cocaine incident
During an interview with GQ for their 2024 Man of the Year edition, John Mulaney shared a story about a cocaine incident in his New York apartment. He had consumed such a large amount of drugs that he feared he might not survive until the next day. Reminiscing on the event, Mulaney mentioned that he had left the door to his apartment ajar. The comedian admitted that he couldn’t fathom the reasoning behind it, but he had considered pressing the door buzzer and instructing the doorman to fetch emergency responders.
The “Saturday Night Live” celebrity expressed concern about not being able to contact emergency services and clarify his situation without them forcing open his apartment door. He went on to say that he ended up sitting on a rug and calmly descending into whatever had happened. Afterward, he recalled thinking, “This is unbelievable. I need to really slow down.” Despite the incident occurring on a specific Tuesday, he admitted to repeating this behavior two days later on Thursday.
According to GQ, John Mulaney struggled with addiction again after separating from Anna Marie Tendler. In 2020, he returned to rehab due to a cocaine and various prescription drug addiction. However, since the intervention, Mulaney has maintained his sobriety. The following year, he found himself in a relationship with Olivia Munn and shortly after, they had their first child together. During the interview, Mulaney spoke about how his current wife has been instrumental in supporting him during his recovery process.
Earlier this year, Mulaney and Munn exchanged vows following Munn’s fight against breast cancer. In September, they added another member to their family, a baby girl named Méi June Mulaney, through the process of surrogacy.
