As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours on the virtual gridiron, I can empathize with Caleb Williams‘ frustration. The hit from Jack Campbell was a textbook example of the kind of “friendly fire” we all dread – right when you think you’re safely back in base, someone decides to take a shot at your knees!
During Thursday’s NFL match-up between the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions, Chicago’s quarterback, Caleb Williams, received a hard tackle from Detroit’s linebacker, Jack Campbell, causing him to step out for a short period. Following the game, Williams spoke about the collision and expressed his feelings on it.
Here’s what Williams had to say about the hit on his knee.
Caleb Williams expresses his view on Jack Campbell’s hit on his knee
During Thursday’s match-up between the Detroit Lions and the Chicago Bears in the second half, Caleb Williams, the Bears’ quarterback, sustained a low tackle by Jack Campbell from the Lions on the sidelines. This blow made Williams’ left knee buckle, leading to an immediate assessment by the medical team on the sideline. Although there were initial worries, Williams continued playing without taking a break and later disclosed that his knee was only bruised. He explained, “My knee is fine. There’s nothing wrong with it. I think I just got a bruise.” (Source: NBC Sports)
When questioned regarding the move following the match, Williams didn’t mince words and labeled the action as “unusual.” He admitted, “Yes, that play was unusual. I guess that’s the best way to put it. To be honest, I didn’t quite enjoy the play. He simply dived headfirst at my knee. So, I didn’t fully understand it. Honestly, I was a bit annoyed about that one, mainly because… you know…” He further added, “I mean, whatever.
Although Williams might have believed the play was unjust, the rules permitted Campbell to deliver the hit because once a quarterback steps outside the pocket and transforms into a runner, he forfeits the usual protections, including the ban on low hits. Campbell acted within his rights by executing the low tackle since Williams was no longer in the quarterback’s protected zone.
Regardless of his initial irritation with the play, Williams soon shook it off and managed to score a touchdown upon re-entering the game.
