In episode 7 of Severance Season 2, titled “Chikhai Bardo,” we delve into the past story of Mark and Gemma, showing us their lives prior to joining Lumon’s detached workforce. This episode highlights the stark contrast between their lives before they were swallowed up by Lumon’s somber, separated world.
Here’s what Lumon did to Gemma in Severance Season 2 Episode 7’s ending
In Episode 7 of Severance Season 2, we delve deeper into the narrative of Gemma, a character previously known to viewers as Mark’s wife who was presumed dead while working on Lumon’s severed floor. However, it’s revealed at the end of this episode that Gemma is indeed alive. It also becomes apparent that Lumon had been monitoring Gemma and Mark long before she joined the team on the severed floor.
Following what appears to be Gemma’s potential miscarriage, Lumon provides her with the Chikhai Bardo cards. It seems that the strain of undergoing IVF may have led to a rift between Gemma and Mark. The couple grow apart, with Gemma eventually seeking solace in Lumon. Unlike Mark, she remains with Lumon, even taking on the role of an “Outie.” In various locations such as Allentown, Cairns, Dranesville, Siena, Loveland, Tumwater, Adelaide, and Wellington, Lumon carries out experiments on Gemma, treating her as a detached individual in several different rooms.
It appears that each room attempts to stir specific emotions in its occupants. Over time, Gemma becomes suspicious of Lumon’s motives and queries Dr. Mauer about seeing Mark. However, the Lumon employee offers a cryptic response: “Mark will gain from the world you’re creating. Kier will alleviate all his suffering, just as Kier has alleviated yours.
Between Gemma and Mark’s recollections and the stark contrast of Lumon’s torment, Gemma attempts to flee from Kier’s realm after striking Dr. Mauer. However, she transforms into an Innie within the elevator, and Mr. Milchick locates her in the Export Hall.
Based on the finale of Severance Season 2, Episode 7, it appears that Lumon’s research into Innies and Outties extends far beyond what viewers initially thought. There’s a strong possibility that the company gathers information about individuals and then coerces them to undergo severance, or even more troubling, as in the case of Gemma, they might use people as complete test subjects with no access to the outside world once they join Lumon.
How is Gemma connected to project Cold Harbor in Severance Season 2?
In the second season of Severance, the storyline delves into Cold Harbor and Mark’s role in its completion. Previously, fans speculated that the Cold Harbor file might represent Gemma’s subconscious. However, Innie Mark appears to be manipulating the data to exclude Gemma from Ms. Casey’s perspective. Yet, Episode 7 suggests that Cold Harbor could actually symbolize a single emotion shared by all severed individuals.
Each file in the MDR department pertains to locations such as Allentown, Cairns, Loveland, Tumwater, and others. At this point, Gemma has not yet accessed Cold Harbor because Mark hasn’t initiated work on it yet. It appears that once Mark finishes refining the data for Cold Harbor, Ms. Casey’s transformation into an Innie can be fully completed.
