Zach Cregger, the filmmaker, is best recognized for his horror films, although his first directorial venture was the sex comedy “Miss March.” However, he’s gained notoriety for his work in the horror genre. He added suspense with his movie “Barbarian” and served as co-producer for the sci-fi thriller “Companion.” His upcoming directorial project is the horror film “Weapons,” which has garnered praise for its trailer at CinemaCon, being described as “completely insane.
Previously, it was understood that New Line Cinema had acquired Zach Cregger’s horror film, with Pedro Pascal initially set to star as the lead. However, due to his obligations to The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Pascal had to withdraw from the project. Eventually, Josh Brolin stepped in to take over the leading role. Furthermore, additional actors such as Julia Garner from Ozark, Alden Ehrenreich from Solo, Benedict Wong from The Three-Body Problem, and others are also set to join the cast.
The horror film titled “Weapons,” initially set for release in January 2026, has been brought forward to August of this year by its distributor, Warner Bros. This decision was likely made due to their positive impression during previews. At present, there’s no official trailer available; however, Variety reported that a chilling sneak peek was unveiled at CinemaCon 20XX in Las Vegas, leaving attendees both amazed and unsettled.
What was shown in the CinemaCon Weapons trailer?
At CinemaCon, it was revealed that Julia Garner will portray an elementary school teacher. One fateful day, she uncovers a shocking truth when she finds out that all of her students from the morning class have vanished mysteriously, having disappeared during the previous night.
In the trailer, a cryptic little girl’s narration stated, “Mrs. Gandy’s room was completely vacant.” She explained that just prior to this, at precisely 2:17 a.m., every child mysteriously rose from their beds, made their way downstairs into the darkness, and never returned.
During this peculiar incident, it’s Julia Garner’s character who seems to be filled with fury. Josh Brolin’s character, on the other hand, fueling the tension, is portrayed in the trailer as a worried parent pressing for information from a schoolteacher about his daughter who has gone missing.
Yet, these absentee children aren’t entirely vanished from the schoolteacher’s perspective. Instead, they manifest as eerie specters, their eye sockets hollow and chilling smiles apparent. The recorded footage appears to depict these seemingly possessed kids strolling drowsily, accompanied by a female figure resembling a clown, lurking in the woods behind the trailer’s edge.
Richard Brener, head of New Line Cinema, characterized Weapons as “thought-provoking and unforeseeable, with a generous dash of utterly crazy.” Zach Cregger portrayed his project as a film that “peels back layers and innovates” throughout its course, suggesting a plethora of shocking surprises similar to those found in his previous creations.
Prepare for some scares this summer by watching Weapons in theaters on August 8th.
