Summary

  • Monster Hunter Wilds is still suffering from performance issues on PC nearly a month later.
  • With no patch in sight, modders have picked up the torch, and one fan has compiled a couple that should fix some of the more glaring problems.
  • They suggest using REFramework and DirectStorage to reduce stuttering and boost fps.

Nearly one month from launch, Monster Hunter Wilds is still plagued by performance issues on PC. Sure, the review score is slowly climbing on Steam, but one glance at the community forums or subreddit, and you’ll see a continuous influx of players begrudging that their hunts are being spoiled by choppy action.

Modders have picked up the torch and tried to remedy the issue, but mods can only do so much. The responsibility ultimately lies at Capcom’s feet. But until a patch comes along, mods are all we have. So, one fan — u/RuDoKa- — has put together an extensive guide on how to fix performance and what tools to use.

REFramework And DirectStorage Supposedly Provide A 30fps Boost

The big ones are REFramework and DirectStorage. REFramework “disables the anti-tamper, which will significantly reduce in-game freezes”. It’s believed that stuttering isn’t caused by Denuvo as many assumed, but instead by Capcom’s additional in-house DRM tech, given that this was also an issue with Resident Evil Village back in 2021.

DirectStorage, meanwhile, should “reduce your frame rate drops when you turn the camera by improving texture loading”. According to the mod creator Darex2094, “Capcom’s implementation of DirectStorage is borked”, so they replaced it with Microsoft’s latest version. Combined with REFramework, u/RuDoKa- claims they were able to get an additional 30fps on average, though your mileage may vary.

In the Reddit post embedded above, they also provided links to graphical mods that supposedly “improve” the visuals, but many argue it looks too vibrant. If you want to give those a whirl, here are some side-by-side comparisons.

Others managed to regain roughly 7-10 frames per second (fps), which is still a substantial enhancement, particularly given the reduced stuttering. However, it’s not as monumental an advancement as some might hope. Regardless, if you’re encountering problems with the PC version of the game at present, these two mods should effectively address the issues.
