The reboot trailer offers numerous humorous instances, but it also takes a playful swipe at O.J. Simpson, who was known for portraying Nordberg in the initial films. In a nod to the show, new characters salute their fathers’ portraits, with Neeson acknowledging Nielsen’s Drebin and Hauser recognizing Captain Ed Hocken. However, when it comes to Nordberg’s portrait, a police officer looks up, shakes his head, and simply says, “no way.
There’s no denying it’s an easy target to joke about The Simpsons’ contentious past, but it’s hard not to chuckle at the audacity – it seems reminiscent of the offbeat humor from The Naked Gun. If the reboot manages to keep this sharp wit while taking aim at other untouchable topics, it could potentially recapture the anarchic genius of the originals.
