As a huge fan of gritty, character-driven dramas, I’ve been eagerly anticipating “The Bikeriders” since its first trailer dropped. Having grown up with stories of outlaw motorcycle clubs and their fascinating culture, I was immediately drawn to the premise of this film based on Danny Lyons’s photography book. The fact that it is directed by Jeff Nichols, who has consistently delivered compelling narratives in his past works, only added to my excitement.

Jeff Nichols’s movie “The Bikeriders,” released in 2024, is an adaptation of Danny Lyons’s 1968 photography book with the same name. In this book, Lyons documented his time with the Chicago Outlaw Motorcycle Club. The film had its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival in August 2023 and hit theaters in June 2024. On August 9, viewers can stream the film on Peacock.

As a seasoned film critic with a deep appreciation for gritty, character-driven stories, I’ve seen my fair share of biker gang movies. But none have captivated me quite like this one, which masterfully weaves the tale of the Vandals Motorcycle Club through the eyes of Kathy, brilliantly played by Jodie Comer. With her soft, gentle voice and unassuming demeanor, she’s an unexpected yet compelling narrator.

The film “Bikeriders” has been well-received with an 81% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on critics’ reviews. Critics have praised Comer’s acting, the impressive ensemble cast, and Nichols’ raw narrative style.

In the film, some characters are inspired by real-life members of the Outlaws motorcycle gang. This applies to Reedus’ character, Funny Sonny, who was previously a Hell’s Angels member but later joined the Outlaws. To fully embody the role, Reedus underwent a remarkable transformation, becoming almost unrecognizable as the famous actor known for portraying Daryl Dixon. His teeth were noticeably rotted, and this was intentional – Reedus didn’t want any similarities between Sonny and Daryl. He successfully achieved his objective, as shown below.

The Bikeriders will begin streaming in Peacock on August 9.

In the upcoming “The Walking Dead” series on AMC and AMC+ starting September 29, Daryl Dixon, portrayed by Reedus, and Carol Peletier, played by Melissa McBride, will take center stage in the second installment titled “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol.”
