The show, adapted from Elin Hilderbrand’s book, left viewers intrigued with numerous questions: Who committed the murder, what secrets does Nicole Kidman’s character Greer conceal, and was Dakota Fanning genuinely pregnant off-screen? This last query even puzzled those on set.
In “The Perfect Couple,” Dakota Fanning didn’t actually carry a real pregnancy while portraying Abby Winbury. Instead, she skillfully used a highly realistic prosthetic for the role of Thomas and Greer’s oldest song’s pregnant wife. A scene involving Abby in a two-piece bathing suit by the pool was especially convincing, showcasing the fake baby bump. The remarkable work done with this prosthetic is so believable that it would deceive any viewer of the series, ensuring you’re not distracted by something unnatural!
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Zoe Saldana shared that she used two distinct prosthetics to make Abby’s pregnancy appear authentic on screen. For scenes where clothing was involved, a fake belly piece was worn underneath. However, for the pool scene, a unique prosthetic was wrapped around her torso like a corset. During the pool scene, all traces of the prosthetic were concealed behind her as she lounged by the pool. The level of realism in this prosthetic, from its visual appearance to its color matching, is truly deserving of an Emmy award.

It was an amazing prosthetic. I didn’t wear that one all the time — there was a different one that I wore under clothes — but there was no way she was going to wear a one-piece at the pool. It to be a bikini and you had to see the belly. But we really had to get it right. It was the most amazing thing I’d ever seen. And it wasn’t a glued-on situation, I put it on like a corset so it wrapped around my whole body and tied in the back. I was laying there so you never saw my back; it was just so seamless from every side. It’s wild. People on set that day were staring at me a ton and then apologizing for staring. Nobody could believe that thing. I loved it.
In a less formal way, it could be rephrased as: During the filming of The Perfect Couple, several cast and crew members seemed to share our confusion at home about who was doing double takes on Fanning’s prosthetic pregnant belly. It’s hard to imagine how convincing it looked in person compared to what we saw on TV. Yet, it appears that Fanning enjoyed playing tricks on everyone by portraying Abby’s pregnancy and her deceitful actions (no spoilers).
Actress Fanning, nominated for the first time at the Primetime Emmys (in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, for her role in Netflix’s Ripley), has expressed earlier this year her wish to become a mother and eventually put family life ahead of her acting career. Although Fanning wasn’t actually pregnant like her character in The Perfect Couple during filming, the pregnancy prosthetics used were so convincing that many people were convinced she was expecting.
