The gradual introduction of development kits by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch 2 has led to a substantial hold-up in third-party games being transferred to the system. Digital Extremes, creators of the renowned free-to-play game Warframe, is among these third-party developers yet to receive the hardware necessary for creating an upgraded version for next-gen platforms.
Why Warframe doesn’t have a Switch 2 port
It’s truly impressive how Warframe, complete with all its existing content, was managed on the original Switch. However, given the fast-action hack-and-slash gameplay of Warframe, it seems a native Switch 2 port would be even more fitting.
According to Steve Sinclair, the CEO of Digital Extremes, the team hasn’t received the necessary hardware yet from Nintendo for creating a Switch 2 version of their game. Once they get the hardware, development on this port will begin immediately.
Our technology group is eager to utilize the powerful processing cores and other fantastic aspects of the Switch 2, but unfortunately, there’s an overwhelming demand for development kits at the moment,” Sinclair pointed out.
Sinclair expressed enthusiasm about working on a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Warframe, stating that they indeed have plans in place. Once they receive the development kit, they will undoubtedly create a tailored version of Warframe for it without a doubt.
Developers of Warframe, just like those working on Marvel Rivals (a highly played live-service game), are both in the same boat, as they’re both yet to receive hardware from Nintendo for developing a possible Switch 2 version of their games.
Sinclair elaborated that the team intends to develop an updated edition of the game, aiming to maximize the capabilities of the latest Nintendo handheld. This includes enhancing visuals noticeably and reducing load times substantially for a smoother gaming experience.
The flow of third-party software on Switch 2 has been rather irregular. Although we’ve seen remarkable ports such as Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy, and a fantastic edition of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4, there are relatively few significant third-party games being released for the system, and almost no popular free-to-play titles are available.
