Critics’ assessments of battlefield dramas are now being released, and the most recent war-themed film from A24 is receiving favorable feedback.
What are the Warfare reviews saying?
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film opened to a very impressive 93% rating, based on 28 reviews available at present. The collaborative effort between directors Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland is being categorized as an action movie; however, Alex Godfrey from Empire Magazine views it equally as a powerful anti-war film.
Godfrey’s review states that “War is a harsh reality, and Warfare doesn’t flinch from this truth. Unlike many movies labeled as anti-war, it packs a punch due to its straightforwardness. It’s brutally honest in a way that deserves respect.
IndieWire’s David Ehrlich mentions the cautionary message conveyed in Warfare, suggesting that the movie is intended to be felt deeply rather than analyzed. However, he admits that it doesn’t make sense to him as an invitation, but instead as a warning born from the scars of recollection.
Chicago Reader’s Kyle Logan similarly pointed out the hyperrealism of the movie, stating that “there can be no question, from this civilians’ perspective with its jarring sound effects, that Warfare is undeniably the most impactful film I have seen in conveying not just the experience but the mental condition of soldiers during war.
Warfare is set to release in theaters on April 11, 2025.
In the movie “Warfare,” we have actors like Will Poulter, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Cosmo Jarvis, Joseph Quinn, Charles Melton, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Taylor John Smith, Michael Gandolfini, and others. Among them, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai will be playing the character of Mendoza in the film.
Before the Civil War became available on Max, Alex Garland directed several films under A24’s distribution. These include Ex Machina in 2014, Annihilation in 2018, and Men in 2022. He also contributed to the direction of Dredd in 2012 without credit, and he was part of the scriptwriting process for 28 Days Later in 2002, Sunshine in 2007, and Never Let Me Go in 2010.
Furthermore, Garland wrote the screenplay for Danny Boyle’s movie titled “28 Years Later,” due in theaters on June 20, 2025. Notably, he is also responsible for writing the script of the sequel to this film, entitled “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” scheduled for release on January 16, 2026.
The movie, penned and helmed by Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland (known for Civil War and 28 Days Later), immerses viewers into a platoon of American Navy SEALs as they navigate through insurgent territory within an Iraqi family’s home. This gripping, firsthand account of contemporary warfare delivers a raw, unfiltered portrayal: unfolding in real-time and inspired by the personal experiences of those who survived it.
