As a devoted fan, I am absolutely thrilled about Tom Payne‘s return to the role of Rob Cole in “The Physician II”. Having watched his journey from Paul “Jesus” Rovia in The Walking Dead to Malcolm Bright in Prodigal Son, it’s fascinating to see him revisit a character he played over a decade ago. It’s like witnessing the continuation of an epic saga that spans across time and space!
Actor Tom Payne gained recognition for portraying Paul “Jesus” Rovia in “The Walking Dead”, Brett Aspinall in “Waterloo Road” on BBC, and Malcolm Bright in “Prodigal Son”. According to Variety, Payne is set to reprise his character from the 2013 movie “The Physician” once more.
Filmmaker Philipp Stölzl is back with The Physician II, the follow-up to the 2013 historical drama, originally inspired by Noah Gordon’s novel. This upcoming movie is crafted from a tale conceived by Jan Berger and Stölzl themselves.
In the initial movie, the story unfolds in an English village during the 11th century. Here, Payne plays Rob Cole, a Christian man from England, who as a young boy witnessed his mother’s death due to an illness (appendicitis). Driven by this tragic event, he dedicates himself to learning medicine. Remarkably, he develops the ability to detect when people are afflicted with a fatal disease. He begins his education under a barber-surgeon, acquiring fundamental knowledge of medieval medicine. Later, he broadens his understanding by embarking on a journey to Persia to gain further insights.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’d say: “In this movie called ‘The Physician’, I find myself starring alongside some heavy hitters like Tom Payne, Ben Kingsley, Stellan Skarsgård, Olivier Martinez, and Emma Rigby in the main roles.
In the continuation of “The Physician,” Cole and his associate are compelled to leave Isfahan and end up in London. During their stay, they disseminate their medical expertise, and Cole develops an interest in the royal court. He engages in another struggle for his patients, acknowledgment of his accomplishments, and the plight of the human spirit.
In the upcoming installment, Payne will be accompanied by Emily Cox (from The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die), Aidan Gillen known for his roles in Game of Thrones and Maze Runner, Áine Rose Daly from Boiling Point and Hanna, Owen Teale recognized for his work in Robin Hood and Game of Thrones, as well as Liam Cunningham, a familiar face from Game of Thrones and Hunger.
2024 saw filming for the upcoming movie taking place across Hungary, Cologne, and Berlin from August to October. The film is slated for a German cinema release on December 25, 2025, while Beta Cinema will manage its international distribution.
Payne had this to say regarding his reprisal of a role he played over 10 years ago.
Not many actors have the opportunity to return to a role they have played. Let alone 10 years later. It is a unique honor that I am able to revisit a character known and beloved by millions and share a new adventure that explores meaningful and universal themes within an epic and engrossing story. I am excited for people to once again enter the world of Rob Cole and enjoy a timeless movie experience.
Currently, Payne is playing a recurring character named Julian Emery on the series “Law & Order: Organized Crime.” Additionally, he can be seen in Kevin Costner’s miniseries, “Horizon: An American Saga,” parts 1 and 2. In 2024, he featured in the supernatural horror film titled “Imaginary.
Don’t forget to listen to Payne and his wife Jennifer Åkerman on their podcast “California Dreamin“, as they share insights about the ups and downs of being parents, their professions, and their latest expansion – twin babies.
