Walking Dead's Eastman, John Carroll Lynch cast in Prime Video's Bosch spinoff

As a fan with a penchant for gripping police procedurals and captivating performances, I am thrilled to see John Carroll Lynch stepping into his next role in the untitled Renee Ballard series! His versatility as an actor, demonstrated through his roles in shows like “The Walking Dead” and “Evil,” will undoubtedly bring depth and authenticity to the character of retired Thomas Laffont.

It is reported by Deadline that actor John Carroll Lynch has landed his next acting gig. He will share the screen with Maggie Q in an upcoming Bosch spinoff titled “Renee Ballard” which is set to air on Amazon’s Prime Video.

The new show, titled “Bosch: Legacy,” is a continuation of the original Amazon series “Bosch,” which premiered in 2014 and was created by Eric Overmyer. This series is based on the police procedural novels by Michael Connely featuring detective Harry Bosch, played by Titus Welliver. The original series ran for seven seasons before it. After that, came the first spinoff, often referred to as “Bosch season 8,” titled “Bosch: Legacy.” This spinoff has already been renewed for a third season.

2023 rolled around with some exciting news for me as a gamer and fan of detective stories – Amazon announced the latest addition to the Bosch series, shifting focus from Harry Bosch to Renee Ballard, played by Maggie Q. This character is inspired by real-life detective Mitzi Roberts, who made her appearance in season 3 of Bosch: Legacy and Michael Connelly’s 2017 novel The Late Show. As a longtime Bosch fan, I can’t wait to see how this change unfolds, especially since Michael Connelly himself will be executive producing the series, marking the first time in Amazon’s Bosch storyline that Harry Bosch won’t be leading the charge.

Ballard heads up the underfunded cold case division within the Los Angeles Police Department, a role that comes with an overwhelming caseload – the largest in the city, no less. This dedicated team, made up entirely of volunteers, handles these frozen-in-time cases with compassion and tenacity. As she faces potential hazards and threats to herself and her colleagues, Ballard plans to seek guidance from retired detective Harry Bosch.

In the new role, Lynch will portray Thomas Laffont, a retired associate of Ballard’s who reappears to aid her in managing the department. A gentle soul, Laffont provides Ballard with crucial support through his expertise as an accomplished interrogator and his rich detective experience.

Alongside Q and Lynch, the show will additionally feature Courtney Taylor portraying Samira, who is part of the cold case unit’s team.

The 10-part untitled Renee Ballard series will air on Prime Video.

John Carroll Lynch – Evil series

Actor Lynch played Eastman during season 6 of “The Walking Dead”. In the episode titled “Here’s Not Here”, he was a mentor and later became a friend to Morgan Jones (played by Lennie James). Besides his upcoming role in the Renee Ballard series, Lynch is also set to make an appearance in the last season of Paramount’s supernatural drama series Evil.

In May, the fourth season of Evil, divided into ten parts, made its debut and was confirmed as its last. The creators were subsequently granted additional material, consisting of four extra episodes, essentially a compact fifth season, to wrap up the plot. These bonus episodes will be broadcast after the season 4 finale, which aired on July 25. The concluding four episodes of the story will air weekly on Thursdays in August.

As a passionate admirer of the series, I found myself stepping into the shoes of Henry Stick, the seemingly inept attorney tasked with defending Leland Townsend, brilliantly portrayed by Michael Emerson. Despite his clumsy demeanor and questionable competence, there lies within him an untapped strength that proves crucial for his client’s case.

Afterward, Lynch will feature in the thriller “She Rides Shotgun,” led by Targon Egerton, which is an adaptation of Jordan Harper’s novel. Additionally, you can catch him in “Babes,” a comedy directed by Pamela Adlon. This film stars Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau as long-time friends navigating the complexities of adulthood and parenthood. You can stream it on VOD via Prime Video.
