As a dedicated gamer and long-time fan of Voltron: Legendary Defender, I’ve been following this show since its Netflix debut back in 2016. It was an instant classic for me, a perfect blend of action, adventure, and heartfelt storytelling that resonated with fans worldwide. The series concluded in 2018, leaving us eagerly anticipating any updates on where we could revisit the world of Voltron.
The beloved television series “Voltron: Legendary Defender,” which initially premiered on Netflix in 2016, is at risk of being taken off the platform. Recently, the creators of the show have released an update about its future availability on streaming services. The show received widespread praise from both critics and viewers during its eight-season run, ending in 2018. Six years later, Netflix has announced that “Voltron: Legendary Defender” will be removed from their platform. To address this unexpected news, the team responsible for the critically acclaimed series has issued a statement to keep fans informed about its streaming status.
Voltron team on whether Legendary Defender could return to Netflix after leaving
The leaders of Voltron have clarified that the show’s agreement with Netflix is about to end. As a result, it looks like the animated series will need to leave Netflix by December, following the existing arrangement.
As a passionate Voltron gamer, I recently got wind that our beloved series, Voltron: Legendary Defender, might be leaving its current home on Netflix. This update came straight from the horse’s mouth, or rather, the team behind Voltron themselves, via their official Facebook page. They clarified that it wasn’t actually produced by Netflix; instead, DreamWorks Animation was responsible for creating this masterpiece, and they licensed it to Netflix. The license is about to expire, which explains the potential shift in its streaming location.
Besides sharing the unfortunate update, the team also offered fans a glimmer of optimism. They disclosed that Netflix and Voltron’s representatives are actively working on renewing the license, which could potentially bring the show back. The team mentioned, “There’s a possibility the license will be renewed; these discussions are currently ongoing among all parties. If the license isn’t renewed, DreamWorks is free to negotiate with another streaming platform.
Although Voltron is nearly ready to depart from Netflix, it’s worth noting that its initial six seasons are also accessible on Amazon Prime Video. With Amazon Studios (MGM) working on a live-action movie featuring Henry Cavill, some fans speculate that the series might transition to Amazon Prime Video following its departure from Netflix.
In their recent post, the Voltron team has clearly dispelled these rumors. They stated that the live-action movie and the expiration of the contract for streaming Legendary Defender have no connection whatsoever. It just so happens that a film which has been in development for quite some time is now starting production, around the same period as the six-year terms of the Netflix contract are drawing to a close.
As I write this, it’s confirmed that Voltron: Legendary Defender will be taken off Netflix on December 7, 2024.
