Volkswagen Restores “Magic Bus” That Survived California Wildfire

Summary

  • VW restores 1977 T2 Bus “Azul” that survived 2025 Palisades Fire
  • Restoration underway at Oxnard Engineering Campus

Volkswagen America is celebrating its third annual International Volkswagen Bus Day by restoring a miraculous survivor from California’s 2025 Palisades Fire – a 1977 T2 Bus nicknamed “Azul”. This van, which stands out with its white and blue color scheme, gained nationwide attention following an AP photograph that depicted it seemingly undamaged amid the burnt-out remnants of a Malibu community.

Currently known as the “magic bus,” Azul is owned by Megan Krystle Weinraub. She was delighted when Volkswagen agreed to examine and refurbish this cherished vehicle. Once granted permission to enter the location, the bus was shipped to VW’s Oxnard Engineering Campus, a place where the brand houses its historic fleet. Upon detailed examination, it was found that the bus required extensive repairs, even though it had a visually appealing side.

Efforts to restore affected areas are currently in progress, with the project anticipated to be finished by the end of this year. This initiative underscores Volkswagen’s continuous commitment to supporting communities in California that have been hit by wildfires. Earlier in the year, the automaker made contributions to the California Fire Foundation, which assists first responders and their families during these challenging times.

Rachael Zaluzec, SVP of Marketing for Volkswagen Group of America, stated that getting Azul back on the road would allow its enchantment and message of optimism to persist.
