Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja surpasses The Crew and Laapataa Ladies to become most-streamed Indian movie on Netflix in 2024

As a die-hard fan who’s been following Vijay Sethupathi’s career since his early days in Tamil cinema, I must say, this is truly a golden era for us fans! The phenomenal success of Maharaja on Netflix is nothing short of a dream come true. Six weeks and it’s already the most-viewed Indian movie on the platform, surpassing even Bollywood giants like The Crew and Laapataa Ladies.

The Tamil film “Maharaja,” starring Vijay Sethupathi and directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, holds the record as the most-watched Indian movie on Netflix. This impressive milestone was reached just six weeks after its digital premiere on July 12, 2024.

Furthermore, this movie has exceeded the view count of popular Bollywood films such as “The Crew” and “Laapataa Ladies.” The announcement about “Maharaja” was actually shared by its creators on their own X (previously Twitter) platform.

According to Gulte’s report, “Maharaja,” starring Vijay Sethupathi, is currently Netflix’s most-watched movie with approximately 18.6 million views. Competing movies such as “The Crew” and “Laapataa Ladies” have garnered around 17.9 and 17.1 million views respectively. In “Maharaja,” directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, Vijay Sethupathi portrays a barbershop owner and single father. The story revolves around his unique bond with his daughter and a steel garbage bin named Lakshmi, which played a crucial role in saving her life.

As a seasoned detective with years of experience under my belt, I can tell you that cases don’t always appear as they seem at first glance. One time, during my career, I encountered a seemingly peculiar situation: A man was frantic about his stolen garbage bin after a burglary at his home. At first, it appeared to be a strange obsession, but I soon discovered the truth beneath the surface.

Apart from Vijay, the film also featured a talented group of actors such as Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Natarajan Subramaniam, Abhirami Gopikumar, Singampuli, Aruldoss, Munishkanth, and several others in significant roles. According to reports from The Economic Times and The Times of India, the movie amassed over 100 crores globally and generated approximately 60 crores from Tamil Nadu alone within just five days after its premiere.

It’s worth noting that during a chat with Touring Talkies, the director shared an interesting tidbit: he originally planned to have actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj in the lead role for the same script. Despite his eagerness to take on the part, neither of them could find a fitting producer, resulting in the filmmaker adapting the essence of the story and producing Maharaja instead.

Moving to Vijay Sethupathi’s upcoming projects, the star of Jawan is all set to take the lead in the film titled Ace. This project will be directed by Arumuga Kumar and marks the Tamil cinema debut of Rukmini Vasanth, who rose to fame in SSE. Joining Vijay Sethupathi on screen will be actors like Yogi Babu, Divya Pillai, Babloo Prithiveeraj, B.S. Avinash, and several others.

Furthermore, the actor is also set to host the reality show, Bigg Boss Tamil for season 8 too.
