More intriguingly, the director of the film, C Prem Kumar, has hinted at the potential creation of a sequel for ’96.
During an interview on a Tamil YouTube channel, filmmaker Prem Kumar Green revealed that plans for a sequel to ’96 have already been developed, even though he initially hesitated about revisiting the same storyline and script. However, he eventually decided to proceed with the project.
He said, “I am excited to work on 96 Part 2 . Initially, I wasn’t keen on making a sequel to 96, but things have evolved. I have finished writing the script for 96 Part 2. I have only a few portions left to write.”
The filmmaker said that he’s shared the movie script with Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha Krishnan’s wife, who enjoyed it. However, Prem Kumar stated that he’s yet to receive confirmation from Vijay and Trisha regarding their availability for the project, as they haven’t set aside dates for filming just yet.
Prem Kumar disclosed, “I discussed the plot with Vijay Sethupathi’s wife, who found it appealing. Time will tell; I need to figure out if Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha can fit our schedules together.
For those not familiar, the movie ’96 was premiered in October 2018. Its heartfelt and sentimental storyline resonated deeply with many viewers. The film centers around the reunion of two past schoolmates, Ram (portrayed by Sethupathi) and Janu (portrayed by Krishnan).
The story that ensues is a tender tale of long-unreturned affection, as they encounter each other again after twenty-two years apart. Though much has altered over the years, it’s the echoes of their enduring love and mutual concern for each other that propel the narrative.
In terms of his professional life, Vijay Sethupathi made a powerful impact by stepping into Kamal Haasan’s shoes as the host of Bigg Boss Tamil Season 8. Furthermore, he has upcoming projects such as Gandhi Talks and the sequel to Viduthalai lined up for him in the near future.
