Video game news in review: The biggest news from the week of September 27, 2024

As a seasoned gamer with memories of gaming consoles older than most millennials, I can hardly contain my excitement for what this week has in store! The anticipation for the Stardew Valley 1.6 update on November 4th is like a farmer waiting for the first ripe crops of autumn. ConcernedApe’s tweet is like the sweet sound of the rooster at dawn, signaling the start of a new day in my digital farm.

This week, the news about video games is everywhere! We’ve got two separate events featuring Sony and Xbox, each revealing sneak peeks of their upcoming games and making exciting new announcements.

But we’re going to start with the one we’ve been waiting for the entire summer.

Stardew Valley 1.6 update for consoles

The wait is nearly over! Stardew Valley’s 1.6 update is coming on November 4th, as confirmed by ConcernedApe on Twitter. Here’s a sneak peek of what you can expect and the reasons behind its delayed release for consoles:

More details on the Annapurna Interactive exodus

IGN published a detailed account of what transpired regarding Annapurna Interactive. If you enjoy peeks behind the curtain of game development, this is a must-read. It’s fascinating to learn that none of them were aware of the deal with Remedy Entertainment! Unbelievable!

The Simpsons: Tapped Out ending in 2025

This mobile game, indeed, is quite old as it has been around for about twelve years, and the television series has been airing longer than my entire lifetime. Electronic Arts (EA) recently announced through an in-app notification that “Tapped Out” will cease to exist by January 2025, with no further downloads available after October.

Being a dedicated fan of “The Simpsons,” I spent the initial four years playing “Tapped Out.” The humor and fresh additions like buildings and costumes kept me engaged and it was an entertaining way to pass time on my mobile device (and honestly, that’s more than enough). It’s always disappointing when a game comes to an end.

Official trailer for season 2 of The Last of Us on MAX

If you’re seeking an emotional rollercoaster today, simply take a peek at the trailer for season 2 of “The Last of Us”. If you’ve experienced the game before, you’re well aware of the poignant journey that awaits.

And the trailer already has us bracing for the worst. Jennifer has a great write up about it over here!

Assassin’s Creed Shadows delayed to 2025

As a devoted gaming enthusiast, it feels like an incomplete week without some video game news, and this time it’s my favorite series, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, that’s causing the stir! Ubisoft has recently announced that the upcoming installment is being pushed back to February 14, 2025. This decision was made following a lukewarm response to Star Wars Outlaws and the controversy surrounding the game’s Black samurai character, which has raised concerns about historical accuracy. Given these circumstances, it comes as no surprise that the release date has been delayed.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom releases

At last, it has arrived! “Echoes of Wisdom” is now available on the Nintendo Switch! Now we can embark on our adventure as Zelda! The feedback from critics has been outstanding, and we simply cannot wait to dive in ourselves.

The PlayStation State of Play and Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2024

We saved the biggest two for last, as Sony held another State of Play earlier in the week and gamers thought there would be some big news since the 30th anniversary stuff from last week fell a little flat. And then two days later, Xbox had an event at the Tokyo Game Show.

In summary, although we didn’t receive Bloodborne Remastered, Bloodborne 2, or Hollow Knight: Silksong, there are still exciting developments on the horizon. We have an upcoming crossover DLC for Stellar Blade with NieR: Automata, a sneak peek at the chilling second DLC for Alan Wake II titled The Lake House, the release date for Monster Hunter: Wilds, and most importantly, the announcement of Ghost of Yōtei, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, set to launch in 2025 and promising visuals as stunning as the original game.

At TGS, they unveiled new previews for “Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater” and announced that “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle”, “Starcraft Remaster”, and both “Starcraft 2” will be added to Game Pass. Additionally, there’s a plentiful supply of JRPGs on the horizon to satisfy your cravings for Japanese role-playing games in the near future.
