Video game news in review: The biggest news from the week of September 20, 2024

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can confidently say that this week has been a rollercoaster of emotions! The gaming world is buzzing with both exciting and concerning news, leaving me on the edge of my ergonomic chair.

This week, there’s a flurry of video game news, ranging from positive developments to disappointments, and new releases too! We’re keeping up with it all.

Of course, we always seem to miss some really big news from last week, so let’s catch up with…

Annapurna Interactive quitting

Indeed, a significant piece of news we overlooked from last week’s roundup involved a potential impasse in negotiations between Annapurna Studios’ founder and president of Annapurna Interactive. They were aiming to establish the gaming division as an independent entity, but it appears their talks hit a roadblock. Ultimately, the entire workforce chose to resign, a decision they did not take lightly.

According to Remedy Entertainment, the current situation won’t impact their upcoming project, “Control 2,” or any television or movie deals they recently made with Annapurna Pictures, since these are distinct entities.

During this transition, we’re unsure about Annapurna Interactive’s current state as they search for new team members. Wishing all those who decided to leave the very best in their upcoming careers!

Palworld getting sued by Pokémon

Was there a sense that the game Palworld swept through the gaming community like a sudden torrential downpour, only to then seemingly vanish without a trace? Despite being an early access title, the excitement surrounding it was genuine… and people quickly began making comparisons between its monster designs and our beloved pocket monsters from long ago.

Well, the time has finally come: Palworld is getting sued by The Pokemon Company for infringing upon “multiple patent rights.” You can Google Translate Nintendo’s official statement here for more information. We’ll just sit tight and see what happens now!

Switch 2 leaks run rampant

This week is incredibly exciting for Nintendo enthusiasts, with many eagerly scouring the web for any hints about the upcoming Nintendo console. I’m still advocating for the name “Super Nintendo Switch” in my petitions.

This week has seen an escalation in excitement, fueled by supposed leaked images revealing the console’s design, whispers that it might boast dual screens like the DS and 3DS models, and reports indicating mass production in China. The leaked photos further suggest that it will come with 12GB of RAM (compared to the original Switch’s 4GB) and internal storage of 256GB (as opposed to the original Switch’s 32GB).

Approach these stories with a good dose of skepticism, since there’s no concrete evidence from Nintendo, and it’s unlikely that Nintendo will disclose any details before their formal announcement.

New game releases this week

This week, we’ve been eagerly anticipating a few items, and one that has particularly piqued our interest is “The Plucky Squire.” It’s receiving positive feedback from all quarters, making us even more excited to get our hands on it.

This week also features an unexpectedly exciting launch – the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. For those considering a purchase, Gameranx provides an informative guide titled “Should You Buy It?” prior to your decision.

This week’s major launch is none other than “Frostpunk 2”, a sequel to the city-building survival game. If you’d like some advice before making your purchase, be sure to glance at our ‘Before You Buy’ section.

One last Jedi game

At this gathering, which was less formal and primarily aimed at real investors, Electronic Arts (EA) shared valuable insights about upcoming projects. Notably, Kotaku has compiled some key takeaways, but what particularly piqued our interest is that the third installment of the Jedi series, expected to be the final one, is currently being developed.

In other words, Cal Kestis’s saga will conclude in a three-part series, which seems perfectly suited for the Star Wars universe. Given that Jedi: Survivor made our recommended games list for 2023, we’re eager to discover what awaits us in the final installment.

PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection

As a gamer, I’m thrilled about Sony’s recent announcement! To celebrate 30 years, they’re releasing a special edition digital version of the PS5, sporting the original PlayStation colors. It’ll also come with a themed DualSense wireless controller that perfectly complements the console. For those who still use disc drives, there’s an exclusive cover available separately. To top it off, there’s even a poster included in the package. This anniversary collection promises to be a fantastic addition to any gaming setup!
