Video game news in review: The biggest news from the week of September 13, 2024

As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions this week in the world of video games. On one hand, I’m thrilled about the potential return of a beloved franchise like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and the chaos that Super Mario Party Jamboree promises to bring.

This week, the video game industry has a towering, albeit unsurprising topic that’s taking center stage. Let’s dive straight into it and discuss it first.

PlayStation 5 Pro

Indeed, the buzzed-about development in the gaming world over the past few months has finally been confirmed: Sony unveiled a mid-generation upgrade for the PlayStation 5, named the PlayStation 5 Enhanced Edition or simply, the PlayStation 5 Pro.

And… not many people are very happy about it.

Generally, it’s mostly about the cost. It retails at $699, however, this doesn’t include the vertical stand or a disc drive. If you’re a gamer who prefers physical game copies, like myself, and wish to vertically position your PS5 Pro, you’ll be spending over $800 for an upgraded console that, while appealing, doesn’t seem to offer significant differences compared to its previous model. It’s reminiscent of every new iPhone release: A bit trendy, but not offering enough unique features to truly distinguish it from its predecessor.

Even though you haven’t owned a PlayStation 5 yet, consider purchasing a PlayStation 4 Pro instead. Alternatively, hold out until Black Friday to check if any retailers offer discounts on the PlayStation 5.

Stardew Valley made entirely of LEGOS

Early this week, I was amazed by something that swept across the internet – a meticulously crafted LEGO replica of the entire Stardew Valley map! The level of detail and dedication in this project is simply mind-blowing. A single glance is all it takes to be speechless.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 releases

It wouldn’t be a news week if there wasn’t a new video game release! This week it’s Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and it’s getting dang good reviews, sitting at an 83 from critics and a 7.9 from users on Metacritic.

According to many, it’s an impressive revival of games from the Xbox 360 era, skillfully updated for current gaming systems. If you need advice before purchasing, Gameranx offers a comprehensive “Before You Buy” review for your consideration.

Super Mario Party Jamboree goes for chaos

For those who crave a bit more disorder in their Mario Party experiences, Nintendo is stepping up to offer just that! The highly anticipated event, Super Mario Party Jamboree, will be focusing heavily on multiplayer online mini-games.

From now on, you’ll be able to play with eight online players instead of four, or if you’re feeling especially adventurous, up to twenty players! Just think about the excitement – or maybe panic – of competing against nineteen others in the mini-games that have been known to test even the strongest friendships! I can hardly wait to see how the results stack up against such a large group!

More Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater…?

There’s no denying the delight one finds in creations from Mythical Kitchen. Recently on their show, Tony Hawk hinted at conversations with Activision that fans will find particularly enjoyable. With the 25th anniversary of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater approaching, is it too soon to entertain our dreams?

I’m just glad that Gameranx’s Jake Baldino’s response to the rumors didn’t disappoint either.

We’ll need to determine if his remarks are hinting at a deeper meaning within the realm of professional skateboarding or if they could potentially launch a brand-new skateboarding venture altogether.
