This week, the gaming world is abuzz with excitement! We have fresh glimpses of forthcoming titles, innovative game projects on the horizon, and a recap on the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. So, without further ado, let’s delve into the latest happenings in the realm of video games!
Death Stranding 2 updates
At SXSW 2025, a comprehensive discussion on “Death Stranding 2: On The Beach” revealed unexpected insights that surpassed our initial expectations.
Initially, there’s an official launch date set: June 26, 2025, exclusively for the PS5. We were treated to an incredibly long trailer overflowing with content that we didn’t expect from the sequel. Yes, it seems Kojima is upping the weird factor, but it appears this game leans more towards action-adventure rather than being a walk simulation like its predecessor. Additionally, there are numerous Easter eggs hidden within, which is exactly what we crave in a video game trailer.
You can watch the whole thing below, and get excited for Death Stranding 2.
Some new tidbits on Intergalactic
Neill Druckmann recently appeared as a guest on Sony’s Creators to Creators podcast prior to the launch of The Last of Us season 2, and during this appearance he shared some intriguing details about Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which was unveiled at the 2024 Game Awards.
In simpler terms, he explains that the game revolves around themes of faith and religion, taking place 2000 years in the future. The unique religion created within this game is called Sempiria, which has been isolated from any contact with the rest of the galaxy for 600 years as the story begins.
This idea sounds intriguing, and given Naughty Dog’s history of exceptional games, we have high confidence that it will be one we won’t want to stop playing.
The Balatro timeline
If you’re intrigued by behind-the-scenes looks at indie video game development, particularly the creation of Balatro, LocalThunk’s blog post is a must-read for you. On his site, he meticulously documents (as accurately as possible) the process of building this quirky game, right from the root folder where it resides, named CardGame. Interestingly, that name hasn’t been updated since its inception.
As a film enthusiast, it’s fascinating for me to witness the evolution of this game since its inception. Initially, Jokers seemed almost non-existent. Yet, the foundation was already laid with Chips and Multipliers in place. It’s downright captivating!
Dungeons of Hinterberg on PlayStation
In 2024, this game found its place on our recommended games list due to its unique blend of comfortable gameplay elements and intense dungeon crawling. You have the freedom to customize the experience to suit your preference, whether you prefer a cozy setting or an action-packed dungeon exploration. Previously only available on PC and Xbox, it’s now also playable on PlayStation consoles – great news for those who own a PS4 or PS5 and have been eagerly awaiting its release!
The Pixel Pack!
As a passionate cinema-goer and gaming enthusiast, let me share an exciting exploration into the realm of video games: I’ve stumbled upon an intriguing endeavor spearheaded by Neil Newbon, famously known as Astarion from Baldur’s Gate 3. He has assembled a stellar team comprising some of the most prominent figures in the gaming industry, aiming to elevate their impact and push boundaries within this captivating field.
There’s an intriguing article published on Entertainment Weekly a few days ago, and it’s worth checking out. The piece aims to emphasize that the individuals who lend their voices to video games are, in fact, still actors. It’s a reminder of the importance of acknowledging and respecting them as artists.
Reflect on this: Video games are frequently underestimated and dismissed. Yet, it was a remarkable instance when none other than Harrison Ford made an appearance at The Game Awards to discuss a video game adaptation featuring him. Shows like “The Last of Us,” “Fallout,” and “Arcane” have gained immense popularity, drawing significantly more focus to the video games they’re derived from.
Video game creators and innovators, who bring characters and worlds to life, deserve equal recognition alongside the actors who voice those characters. It’s high time we acknowledge their significant role in shaping our gaming experiences.
Which segues perfectly into the next topic…
That SAG-AFTRA strike is still going on
As a devoted cinephile reflecting back on the summer months, I can’t help but recall the significant event that unfolded last July – SAG-AFTRA announcing a strike against video game publishers. The cause? A trio of contentious matters: compensation, artificial intelligence protections, and other pressing issues. Now, here we are eight months later, and this labor action shows no signs of resolution.
In the latest proposal from SAG-AFTRA, concerns persist regarding AI applications, particularly relevant in the gaming sector (as highlighted in that article where Newbon claimed unauthorized use of his voice by a character-creator app). I’d like to bring to your attention that… things remain stagnant, and this issue continues to be problematic.
