Video game news in review: The biggest news from the week of August 12, 2024

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say this week’s video game news has been a veritable feast for the senses! From tantalizing teasers to concrete release dates, it seems like Santa Claus came early this year!

As a long-time video game enthusiast who has weathered many a gaming drought, I must say that this week’s news feels like a much-needed burst of sunshine. The tantalizing hints about upcoming games, the confirmed release dates, and even more teasers for new games are a refreshing change from the usual dry spell. It’s like a breath of fresh air in the gaming community, bringing renewed excitement and anticipation for what’s to come.

So let’s start with all the good news!

Hi-Fi Rush and Tango Gameworks are back!

Indeed, that’s correct! The studio known as Tango Gameworks was rescued by the company behind PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Krafton. In fact, they are moving approximately 50 developers over to work on the potential sequel to Hi-Fi Rush!

It’s incredibly refreshing amidst the wave of layoffs and company closures in the industry this year, to find out that Hi-Fi Rush fans have another opportunity to continue their work. Previously, Tango Gameworks was closed by Microsoft back in May, leaving many fans bewildered.

Among the games not acquired by Krafton are The Evil Within, its additional content, and Ghostwire: Tokyo.

Borderlands 4 tease

Despite the Borderlands film bombing spectacularly, it seems a bit puzzling that there are hints of Borderlands 4. I suppose any attention generated, even negative, could be considered beneficial?

Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox, shared on Twitter that they are putting in a lot of effort “for you on what’s coming up next…” While it may seem like a minor typo, it’s actually a hint. We all suspected there would be a Borderlands 4, so it’s not completely unexpected, but the hint still adds an element of excitement to the anticipation.

The Nintendo Switch 2 may not be until mid-2025

It’s been the longest period without a new Nintendo console release, and both fans and experts are beginning to cast curious glances at Nintendo, as it’s now been nearly nine years since the Switch debuted.

It seems that trend-wise, it looks like we won’t be seeing the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 this current financial year as per discussions in The GamesIndustry.biz Microcast. However, Nintendo has hinted that they might announce something about it before their fiscal year ends on March 31, 2025.

And they seem like they’re going to wait until the last moment to announce it.

Remedy’s quarterly update

Hey there fellow gaming enthusiasts! I can’t help but share some exciting news that’s been brewing from the creative minds behind our beloved titles, Alan Wake and Control – Remedy Entertainment. They recently released their half-year financial report, and as fans, we can’t wait to see what they’ve got cooking up next! So buckle up, grab a cup of coffee, and let’s dive into the latest updates together.

According to the data presented, “Alan Wake 2” is almost breaking even on its cost (a record-breaking and fastest-selling game for Remedy Entertainment). However, what’s more exciting is that the remakes of “Max Payne 1 & 2” are now fully in production, and internally, “Control 2” has reached a state of production readiness. Additionally, another DLC for “Alan Wake 2” is coming in October!

Two games get official release dates

As a dedicated gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming releases of “The Plucky Squire” and “Dragon Age: The Veilguard”. These titles have been on my radar for quite some time now, and finally having official release dates feels like a dream come true. I remember eagerly anticipating new games back in the day when the internet was still young, waiting weeks or even months for updates about upcoming releases. So, to know that these two highly-anticipated titles are actually on their way is nothing short of thrilling! I can hardly wait to get my hands on them and immerse myself in their captivating worlds once more.

Excitedly speaking as a fan, I’m thrilled to share that “Dragon Age: The Veilguard” is set to drop on October 31, marking nearly a decade since the last “Dragon Age” game. With the release date having been leaked, they’ve unveiled an exciting trailer announcement for it!

On September 17th, “The Plucky Squire” is set to launch, and it will be immediately accessible for PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium members on their release day. This timing also provides a bit of space between it and the impending “Zelda” game, which is an added bonus, and we can’t wait to play it!
