Video game news in review: The biggest news from the week of April 11, 2025

This past week, video game news spanned a wide range of topics. There was significantly less news about Nintendo Switch, but there were still some interesting tidbits to explore, so let’s delve straight into it!

The upgraded Switch 2 price for Zelda

As a moviegoer, I was thrilled when Nintendo unveiled the pricing details for the upgraded editions of “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” and “Tears of the Kingdom” on their upcoming Switch 2 console. To my surprise, each game is only going to cost an additional $10. Frankly, I had anticipated a higher price tag from Nintendo for these highly anticipated titles.

Yet, it was clarified that the expansion pass for “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” won’t be a part of the updated Switch 2 editions. Just as expected from Nintendo!

Death Stranding movie has a director

In essence, playing Death Stranding is similar to watching a movie, but if you’re keen on a cinematic version of the game, Deadline reports that Michael Sarnoski has been chosen as director. He is particularly recognized for his work on Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One, both of which seem perfectly suited to the strange and dark nature of Death Stranding. It appears this adaptation will be under capable guidance.

Oblivion remake could shadowdrop at any moment

Indeed, as you’ve heard, the long-awaited, eagerly expected remake of Oblivion, from Bethesda, is said to be coming out quite soon. While there had been whispers that an announcement would precede a swift release, Jeff Grubb at Giant Bomb hints that it could drop this very month and might even hit shelves on the same day.

Triple-i Initiative 2025

Earlier this week, the Triple-I Initiative, now in its second year, took place. For those unaware, it’s a platform exclusively dedicated to independent video games. Unlike traditional events with hosts or advertisements, it solely presents videos showcasing various indie games. This time around, they revealed numerous indie games set for release, updated release windows, and fresh updates.

Here, you’ll discover a comprehensive list of all announcements, but the ones that really piqued our interest include Duskfade – a captivating “clockpunk” platformer, Cloverpit – a fusion of Balatro and Buckshot Roulette, Over the Hill – an engaging four-wheeled puzzle game, and what has me particularly thrilled is the prospect of a deeper look (and potential release date) for Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault.

The Last of Us season 2 release and reviews and renewal

Without the second season’s debut, HBO has announced (predictably) that they have renewed The Last of Us for a third season. They’ve hinted that it might stretch to a total of four seasons.

The second season debuts on April 13, garnering positive feedback all around. It promises an engaging watch as we explore how they alter the storyline from the original game. A notable change is that both Ellie and Abby’s stories will unfold simultaneously, rather than switching back and forth through a time leap.
