The $100 million settlement from Verizon‘s class action lawsuit is now being distributed among affected customers. Yet, the payments turned out to be smaller than many initially expected. This settlement was designed to reimburse those who were unknowingly charged hidden administrative fees. However, a number of individuals have voiced their disappointment on social media platforms.
Here is everything to know about Verizon’s class action lawsuit settlement.
Verizon class action lawsuit settlement explained
2024 marks the start of payouts from a $100 million class action settlement that Verizon Wireless initiated. This comes after a lawsuit was filed against them for deceiving customers by charging hidden administrative fees without disclosure. The lawsuit, which was brought forth in 2021, alleged that Verizon failed to mention these additional fees in their advertisements, resulting in customers paying more than the advertised price for their plans unknowingly. Verizon agreed to settle this lawsuit in 2023, and the distribution of funds commenced in 2024, following court approval.
Despite the substantial compensation given out, numerous customers expressed disappointment about the size of their individual payouts. On X (previously Twitter), some users voiced frustration over receiving minimal amounts, like $2.37 and $4. In fact, some people humorously suggested that they would donate their payments, labeling the class action process as a “time-waster.”
As a Verizon customer who’s been caught up in the fuss over these questionable charges between January 1, 2016, and November 8, 2023, you might be due for some compensation. To be eligible, you had to be using a postpaid wireless or data plan during that timeframe and racked up administrative or telecom recovery fees. If you fall under this category, you needed to submit your claim by April 15, 2024. The good news is, if everything goes as planned in court on March 22, 2024, you’ll receive your payout afterwards.
For each valid claim, you’ll receive a base payment of fifteen dollars. Additionally, if the customer was billed disputed fees during that month, you will get an extra dollar bonus for that month. However, this monthly bonus is limited to a maximum of eighty-five dollars across all months. The total compensation for a single claimant cannot exceed one hundred dollars. Payment options include checks or electronic transfers. Any funds left unclaimed are considered as unclaimed property according to the regulations of the respective state.
