As a devoted fan of Tamil cinema, I find myself deeply intrigued by Director Venkat Prabhu’s recent revelation about the similarities between his film The Greatest Of All Time and the classic Rajadurai. It’s fascinating to witness the intertwining threads that weave through our beloved movies, often unbeknownst to the creators until much later.
At a recent gathering, director Venkat Prabhu expressed his thoughts on the resemblance between his movie, “The Greatest Of All Time,” featuring Thalapathy Vijay, and the classic film “Rajadurai” starring Vijayakanth.
A video posted by Movie Tamil on X (previously Twitter) revealed that the director admitted to discovering about the Vijayakanth film, Rajadurai, only after The GOAT’s premiere. In the clip, the director stated, “I honestly found out there was another movie with a similar storyline once The GOAT was released in theaters. It was through social media comments that I learned of this film and eventually watched it.
He also mentioned, “Had I known about it sooner, I would have improved my tale significantly after watching it. The theme of a father and son is universally relatable. I’ve seen numerous English films on the subject, but somehow I overlooked this one.” (Informal translation)
Additionally, Venkat Prabhu elaborated on the idea that films can inspire other productions much in the same way, and he shared his personal experiences of learning filmmaking techniques by observing such movies.
For those unaware, Rajadurai is a Tamil language movie starring Captain Vijayakanth in the lead role as both father and son. While the father being an honest IPS officer, an adversary kidnaps his son and raises him as his own to use him as a tool for revenge in the future.
In this film, the direction was skillfully handled by SA Chandrasekhar, who is Thalapathy Vijay’s father, and boasted a talented group of actors such as Jayasudha, Sivaranjani, and R. Sundarrajan in significant parts.
In contrast, the movie titled “The Greatest Of All Time” featuring Vijay shares a similar narrative where an undercover spy, who is also an anti-terrorist squad agent, experiences the tragic loss of his son. However, years pass and the son mysteriously reappears in this storyline. Remarkably, Vijay takes on dual roles, playing both father and son. Interestingly, a past adversary of the father masterminds the plot’s intricate web.
The film drew both positive and negative feedback, featuring prominent actors such as Prashanth, Prabhu Deva, Mohan, Sneha, and Meenakshi Chaudhary among its main cast. Now, you can watch it online on Netflix.
