As a seasoned gamer who has been burned more times than I can count by unfulfilled DLC promises, Valve’s new guidelines on Steam are like a breath of fresh air. I remember the heartbreak when Final Fantasy 15’s DLC was canceled, or when other games failed to deliver on their season pass content.
In the current week, Valve has introduced updated regulations for Steam, focusing particularly on rules concerning DLC launch schedules and content delivery. Going forward, developers releasing DLC or expansions are expected to establish release dates for season pass-type content. Moreover, they must offer partial refunds for DLC if the promised content isn’t delivered completely or is discontinued.
This week, Valve published updated rules concerning downloadable content (DLC) and season passes on their Steamworks blog. The new regulations are designed to safeguard consumers and prevent any underhanded activities related to pre-ordered DLC or season pass content. Developers will now be required to set a release schedule for their DLC offerings listed on Steam. Furthermore, the quality of DLC and season pass content is important, and if developers fail to deliver as promised (for example, by canceling part of a season pass or not releasing the DLC altogether), buyers may be eligible for a refund for any unfulfilled content that was originally stated in the product description.
As a dedicated gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled about the new measures intended to keep developers responsible for their DLC and season pass commitments. In the past, disappointments like the cancellation of DLC packs for games like Final Fantasy 15 have been a reality. Many other titles have faced similar challenges, particularly those with lackluster initial sales. These new rules on Steam promise to give us, the customers, a sense of security. We’ll know that if there are any issues with season passes, we won’t be left hanging with a pre-order that doesn’t deliver as promised.
It’s intriguing to observe how Steam, along with its developers and publishers, may react to the new updates Valve is implementing. Keep an eye out for further news, which we’ll be sharing here on Shacknews.
