Steam has confirmed accounts of a suspected Steam data leak, with the corporation explaining that it wasn’t actually a hack of their systems but rather an older chat logs release.

Reports emerged on May 14, 2025, suggesting that Valve experienced a security incident on their platform Steam. However, Valve has countered these claims by saying it was not a breach but rather a leak. They are now actively investigating the situation further, as detailed in their official statement below.

It’s possible you’ve come across news about older text messages being leaked, which were originally sent to Steam users. Upon investigating the sample of the leak, we can confirm that it did not involve any breach in our Steam system.

We’re continuing our investigation to find the origin of the leak, made more complex because SMS messages aren’t encrypted during transmission, and they pass through several service providers before reaching your device.

The leak involved older text messages containing one-time codes, valid for 15 minutes each, along with phone numbers they were sent to. However, the leaked data did not connect these phone numbers to any specific Steam account, login credentials, payment details, or personal information. It’s important to note that these old texts can’t be exploited to compromise your Steam account security. Whenever a code is used to modify your Steam email or password via SMS, you will receive an email confirmation and/or secure messages from Steam as well.

There’s no need for you to update your passwords or phone numbers due to this incident. It serves as a friendly reminder to view with suspicion any account security alerts that you didn’t specifically ask for.
