The Steam Deck operates on SteamOS, a unique software developed by Valve which enables players to bring their PC gaming collections wherever they go. In the last few years, various competitors have emerged in the portable PC gaming market, and Valve aims to share the enjoyment in 2025. It has been announced that SteamOS will be available on the Lenovo Legion Go S, making it the first third-party device to launch with compatibility for this software.
Today, Valve shared their latest approach towards SteamOS in a blog post. In collaboration with Lenovo, they’re working on a “Powered by SteamOS” version of an upcoming handheld device, ensuring that SteamOS is optimized to run smoothly and deliver the consistent, seamless user experience that customers have come to expect on the Lenovo Legion Go S.
Before the unveiling of the Lenovo Legion Go S towards the end of this year, Valve is planning to make available a beta edition of SteamOS. This new version is designed to work with handheld devices other than the Steam Deck. Users will have the opportunity to get their hands on the beta and experiment with it on their own gadgets.
SteamOS, which is uniquely tailored for portable gaming on the Steam Deck, offers game suspension and resumption capabilities among other gaming-focused features. Originally a proprietary software for Valve’s handheld device, it plans to broaden its reach to external devices starting this year, marking its first steps beyond Valve’s ecosystem.
