Valve artist states Half-Life 3 is actually being made, and it “isn’t their first attempt” at finishing the trilogy

Among the most enduring memes in gaming culture is the anticipated release of Half-Life 3, yet there’s renewed hope as Valve may be actively working on this long-awaited sequel. In a recent conversation, Evgeniy Evstratiy – an artist involved with Valve’s latest game Deadlock – hinted that development for Half-Life 3 is underway at the studio.

On the Russian gaming podcast CG Voices, Evstratiy mentioned he’s had a peek into the studio where Half-Life 3 is being developed, as translated from Russian. Moreover, this artist has suggested that Valve has made multiple attempts to create Half-Life 3 in the past, implying numerous abandoned versions throughout the last ten years.

The artist mentioned, “I’m not sure if I’m permitted to disclose this or not, but I was in the workspace where Half-Life 3 is being produced (or at least, I believe so). Nevertheless, I didn’t witness the development process itself; instead, I saw the office space, the computers, and the whiteboards. It seemed that creating Half-Life 3 isn’t their initial endeavor.

As an enthusiastic supporter, I can share that Evstratiy clarified Valve’s current endeavors on the third installment shouldn’t be mistaken as a definitive promise. Nevertheless, it’s exciting to know that our beloved PC gaming powerhouse is actively working on something to potentially deliver a third game to us fans!

It’s not the first occasion that Half-Life 3 has come up in recent chats. In fact, just a short while ago, a well-known Valve insider, Gabe Follower (who leaked Deadlock before its debut), mentioned that the next game in the series is currently being tested for play.

Under the codename HLX, this game is rumored to be going through a period of optimization, which will bring innovative features like realistic deformable objects, sophisticated NPC interactions, intricate enemy artificial intelligence, and a dynamic hair system. Furthermore, the teased Zombie Gorilla in Half-Life: Alyx is anticipated to serve as a playable adversary.

It’s been a significant wait for the third installment of this series, with 21 years having passed since Half-Life 2 and another 18 years since Episode 2 hit the shelves. Yet, the overwhelming enthusiasm surrounding Half-Life: Alyx, the VR spin-off, underscores fans’ strong desire for more content. Here’s hoping that in the not-too-distant future, we’ll finally get a new addition to the series.
