The death certificate contained further medical information, noting that the person died from complications including acute and chronic respiratory failures, and squamous cell cancer of the tongue’s base as pre-existing conditions.
On April 7, seven days following his passing, Kilmer underwent cremation. Previously in the same month, The New York Times announced that pneumonia was believed to be the reason behind his death, following confirmation from his daughter, Mercedes Kilmer. Besides his daughter, he also leaves behind his son Jack, whom he co-parented with actress Joanne Whalley.
After the unfortunate demise of this gaming legend, I’d like to share a message from his family, spoken directly from their hearts: “We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and respect honoring our exceptional father’s memory. We feel immense pride in him and are touched to see his impact celebrated. At present, we wish to mourn privately.
Over four thrilling decades, I’ve left my mark on Hollywood, and it all started with the iconic role of Iceman in Top Gun (1986), a part I revisited in the much-anticipated sequel, Top Gun: Maverick (2022). But that wasn’t all – stepping into the shoes of Jim Morrison in The Doors (1991) and donning the cape as Batman in Batman Forever (1995) only served to strengthen my status as a beloved movie icon.
In spite of facing significant health challenges, such as two tracheotomies after being diagnosed with cancer in 2014, Kilmer persisted in his work. He also showcased his talent in notable films like Heat, Tombstone, The Ghost and the Darkness, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and The Prince of Egypt.
